Assistant Professor (K-12 Educational Leadership) Department of Leadership and Counseling at Eastern Michigan University
General Summary
The Department of Leadership and Counseling is seeking applicants for a tenure track faculty position with specialization in K-12 Educational Leadership to begin in August 2021. Faculty members are expected to focus on teaching, scholarship, and service as well as collaborate with colleagues across the university. The candidate will be expected to teach and mentor graduate students in an online environment and engage in doctoral level work, chairing and serving on dissertation committees.
Eastern Michigan University is located in Ypsilanti, adjacent to Ann Arbor and 45 minutes from downtown Detroit. The Educational Leadership Program within the Department of Leadership and Counseling offers an undergraduate LEAD minor, three distinct master-level program tracks for aspiring educational leaders, and a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Educational Leadership. The K-12 master's level programs are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) as well as being approved by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) for administrative certification and central office endorsement.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities

- Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and justice evidenced in teaching, scholarship, and service
- Contribute to learning and knowledge development by teaching intellectually dynamic graduate and undergraduate courses that address leadership within pluralistic contexts
- Create and co-construct transformative curriculum and enact pedagogy to reflect and support inclusive excellence
- Provide academic advising to diverse students
- Provide service to department, college, university committees, and impact local and global communities
- Contribute to scholarship and explore interdisciplinary implications and academic pursuits to add to the field and remain current in their respective disciplines
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between EMU and the EMU Chapter of the American Association of University Professors, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and justice evidenced in teaching, scholarship, and service
- A doctorate, or earned doctorate by August 2021, in educational leadership/administration or a related field from an accredited institution
- Prior experience as a P-12 educator, preferably in a leadership role
- Previous teaching experience with preference for graduate-level teaching and teaching in an online environment
- Promise and demonstrated skills to establish or continue a research agenda evidenced by publications
- Previous experience with or demonstrated ability to supervise dissertation research
Desired Qualifications
- Administrative experience as a P-12 building or central office leader
- Scholarship, expertise, and teaching interests within one or more of the following areas: organizational theory, supervision of instruction, school law, building or site level leadership, central office level leadership, allocation of resources (i.e., human, facilities, and material)
- Experience in qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods research
- Desire or demonstrated experience in advising students
- Experience acquiring or pursuing external funding
- Engagement in local, regional or national organizations
The successful candidate will serve an eight-month, tenure track appointment at the Assistant Professor rank. A competitive salary will be based on qualifications and prior experience. Eastern Michigan University may consider up to two years of credit for service at another institution at the Assistant Professor rank. The start date should be no later than August 29, 2021.
