Job Description

Primary Job Responsibilities:

• Primary sport oversight of Olympic sports with a focus on creating a comprehensive performance nutrition program for men’s and women’s basketball. Additional sports assigned.

• Assess and analyze dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance of student-athletes in the context of athletic performance and health

• Assessment and counseling of student-athletes on optimal nutritional practices for exercise training, competition, recovery from practice, recovery from injury and illness, weight management, hydration supplementation and legal use of dietary supplements, regularly banned drugs and restricted substances in compliance with sport governing bodies

• Identify and advise on medical-related nutrition concerns such as anemia, disordered eating, diabetes, bone mineral disturbances, amenorrhea, hypertension, GI concerns, food allergies and intolerances, and other medical conditions

• Provide personalized meal and snacks plans to promote achieving short- and long-term goals for athletic performance and health • Attend workouts, practices, and games to provide the care, education, and fuel necessary for peak performance

• Develop resources to support educational efforts (nutrition education handouts, social media to highlight sports, and any additional educational materials for on-site dining education)

• Document nutrition services provided and evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition strategies towards meeting desired outcomes

• Participate in the recruitment process to provide prospective student-athletes and family members with a comprehensive overview of performance nutrition services for sports

• Attend and actively participate in team meal monitoring and plate-side nutrition education for student-athletes at meals, snacks, and pre-game meals

• Develop and deliver nutrition education presentations, demonstrations, or events on various topics related to nutrition for performance

• Recommend appropriate pre-, during, and post-exercise fluids and snacks for individual team practice and competition

• Coordinate and communicate travel nutrition needs for assigned teams

• Coordinate and develop nutrition education materials for primary sports including but not limited to: grocery store tours, cooking demonstrations, handouts and team manuals

• Conduct inventory, manage ordering, receiving, distribution, and procurement of goods for assigned sports utilizing current system in place

• Forecast weekly needs for sport-specific fueling stations • Maintain a consistent presence at primary sports throughout the week by participating and/or attending staff meetings, team meals, conducting weigh-ins, and any nutritional and hydration needs for practice (pre-fuel, refuel, personalized hydration plans, etc)

• Provide consistent communication to the coaching staffs, director of operations, strength and conditioning staffs, sports medicine staffs, team physicians, and department psychologists regarding sports nutrition and performance related issues and communicate appropriately to Director Assist in the training and mentoring of Fellows (RDs) and Student Workers (with assistance from Director)

• Perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of Sports Nutrition

Required Professional Skills and Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, dietetics, or related field

• Registered Dietitian with active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration

• Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN) in the state of North Carolina within 3 months of hire; required temporary license within 30 days to practice per state law

• Minimum 1 year of experience

• Must possess problem-solving and critical thinking skills, innovation and creativity, adaptability, initiative and stress tolerance to various situations in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment

• Must be able to establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, coaches, student-athletes, physicians, and other allied health professionals

• Must provide a high level of customer service • Proven ability to multi-task, work independently, prioritize, and complete tasks in a timely manner

• Excellent time and priority management, organizational, and record-keeping skills

• Demonstrated ability in public speaking skills

• Exhibit strong creative, organizational, and interpersonal skills

• Demonstrated ability to function professionally under high stress and confrontational circumstances.

• Ability to work a non-standard work-week which may include early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, non-traditional work hours, and overnight travel as needed

• Ability to work as a supportive and integrative performance nutrition team member

• Knowledge of food service quality and safety procedures

• Ability to operate with the highest standards of impartiality and professionalism

• Ability to uphold the core values of the athletics department in all aspect of work and operate in an ethical manner

• Ability to gain and maintain a working knowledge of rules and regulations of the Wake Forest University, ACC Conference, NCAA and United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) regarding nutritional supplements, banned drugs and restricted substances

• Ability and willingness to comply with disclosure regulations relative to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPPA)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in sports nutrition, exercise physiology, sports psychology or other health related field

• Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) within 1st year of hire

• Working knowledge of ACC conference, NCAA, and USADA rules and regulations
