The University of Kentucky is seeking an Assistant Director of Bands / Director of Athletic Bands who will help expand the prominence of a nationally recognized university band program. The Assistant Director of Bands will lead a large, vibrant, and highly visible major university athletic band program as Director of the University of Kentucky “Wildcat Marching Band” and UK Pep Bands.
Candidates should demonstrate a successful record of recruitment, teaching, administration, professional integrity, and leadership. Teaching duties will include but may not be limited to conducting the University Concert Band, instruction in marching band techniques, supervising student teachers in the instrumental music education area, and providing other collaborative support in instrumental conducting and / or music education. The Assistant Director of Bands will assist the Director of Bands with program administration, fiscal planning and management, coordination of special events, and general UK Bands and instrumental education recruitment efforts.
The Assistant Director of Bands will also collaborate with members of the UK Bands staff and University constituents, including the Associate Director of Bands, Graduate Teaching Assistants, UK Athletics, Alumni, and other administrators / faculty / staff in the UK School of Music.
The successful candidate will be expected to build a creative and research profile consistent with School of Music standards in performance areas, participate in shared governance within the School of Music, and establish and maintain positive relationships with secondary school band directors throughout the region that lead to excellent recruitment and retention of students within the UK School of Music and UK Bands.
The School of Music has 53 full-time faculty, with an enrollment of over 400 students. The School of Music offers baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral degrees in music performance, music education, musicology/ethnomusicology, and theory/composition, as well as a master’s degree in music therapy.
