The University Library Cataloging and Metadata Analyst leads the Cataloging and Metadata operation within the Data and Resource Services Unit, providing innovative leadership, vision, planning and expertise to support cataloging, metadata and discovery services. The Unit catalogs monographs and continuing resources in all formats in accordance with current national standards and the policies and best practices of the CSU’s Unified Library Management System (ULMS), utilizing OCLC (a world-wide cataloging database) and the integrated online library system (ILS). The Cataloging and Metadata Analyst also serves as the liaison with the CSU's ULMS Cataloging group, contributing to system-wide development and presentation of ULMS best practices. This position coordinates metadata services for the library’s digital collections.
Reporting to the University Library’s Director of Data and Resource Services, and receiving work lead direction from the Head of Systems and Metadata, the University Library Cataloging and Metadata Analyst works respectfully and cooperatively with employees of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library to perform duties under limited supervision, but works independently to achieve specified outcomes.
- Provides leadership and oversight for the cataloging and processing of material in accordance with the policies and best practices of the CSU’s Unified Library Management System (ULMS) group, and serves as primary liaison with the ULMS Cataloging group.
- Collaborates with department and CSU colleagues to appropriately implement catalog record normalization and remediation that impacts the system-wide shared catalog (ULMS).
- Coordinates and prioritizes projects related to cataloging batch loads, normalization and other bibliographic maintenance.
- Supports staff in maximizing cataloging productivity through effective use of technology and resources.
- Serves as a resource for principles and best practices in cataloging and descriptive metadata utilizing one or more of the following standards: MARC, RDA, Dublin Core, MODS, FRBR, and BIBFRAME.
- Monitors and evaluates emerging technology and makes recommendations for implementation as appropriate.
- Provides leadership and oversight for metadata creation to support the discovery and use of the Library’s Digital Collections and Institutional Repository content.
- Supports staff in maximizing metadata productivity through effective use of technology and resources.
- Contributes to projects involving emerging metadata schemas and support for the library’s digital strategy.
- Develops guidelines and standards for metadata creation in the digital collections database.
- Performs analysis and manipulation of metadata utilizing one or more of the following: MarcEdit, OpenRefine, Python, XSLT, etc. Leads initiatives and oversees improvement of metadata to reflect inclusive, socially-just terminology.
- Creates, maintains and posts cataloging and metadata policy and procedure documentation for staff access.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, policies, practices, and procedures of library, cataloging and metadata services, and their relationship to overall library functions and other units as well as the ability to apply this expertise and judgment to address unique problems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of principles and best practices in cataloging and descriptive metadata utilizing one or more of the following standards: MARC, RDA, Dublin Core, MODS, FRBR, and BIBFRAME
- Thorough knowledge library classification schemes, including Library of Congress and Dewey decimal systems; online catalog; and computer applications in the library; library terminology, general bibliographic forms and structures.
- Comprehensive knowledge of external online databases, systems, resources, and trends pertaining to the assigned functional area, including expertise in searching strategies.
- Comprehensive knowledge of national standards and resources pertaining to library operations, including the ability to source and interpret information from such resources.
- Demonstrated knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling; ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports.
- Ability to interpret, modify, and verify library records within established rules and procedures; understand and operate library computer systems and use the resulting output.
- Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment; handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects.
- Must possess strong verbal communication skills; excellent customer service and public relations skills.
- Ability to work independently using relevant knowledge to determine the best course of action.
- Ability to be flexible and adapt quickly to new assignments and work under pressure.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the work group and work in a team environment.
- A Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training Input required qualifications
- Two years of administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs
- Bachelor’s degree and three years progressively responsible library experience, including cataloging functions.
- A combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities may be considered
- Demonstrated cataloging experience including original cataloging, preferably in an academic or research library
- Knowledge of RDA, MARC formats, Library of Congress classification system, and Library of Congress subject headings
- Experience creating metadata utilizing Dublin Core, MODS, or other metadata schema
- Experience with Linked Data and RDF
- Experience cataloging with integrated library systems (ILS), specifically Ex Libris Alma
Classification: Administrative Analyst Specialist - Exempt I
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,000/month - $6,000/month
Hiring Range: $3,897/month - $7,051/month
