The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Colby College is in search of a collaborative, community-building, student-centered leader to serve as assistant/associate dean of diversity, equity, and inclusion and director of the Pugh Center for Student Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The Pugh Center is a vibrant hub for student programs and activities as well as an access portal for students who have been historically underserved in higher education, connecting them to the vast array of resources and opportunities that make up the Colby experience.

Reporting to the dean of diversity, equity, and inclusion, the successful candidate will have overall leadership and management responsibility for services, facilities, staffing, day-to-day operations, and programming of the Center in support of the College's goal to develop and implement key strategic initiatives aimed at cultivating inclusive and equitable excellence as a fundamental value. The assistant/associate dean will work in collaboration with campus partners to develop and implement strategies to enhance the quality of underrepresented students' college experience. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Leadership

  • Lead a team of professionals responsible for providing direction and support for the core functions of the Pugh Center for Student, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and its affiliated student organizations and activities in the areas of student leadership development, engagement, and community building
  • In alignment with the strategic priorities of Dean of the College Division and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, set organizational direction, including establishing goals and priorities, standards of operation, program assessment and evaluation, strategic planning, and issue identification and resolution in the areas of leadership and organization development
  • Ensure that the Pugh Center’s mission to become a robust hub of student activity and resources that enhance the academic experience of all Colby students with a specific focus on underrepresented students, is achieved
  • Utilize institutional data with relevant research and theory to inform promising practices and ensure ongoing evaluation of the Pugh Center programming

Management, Program Oversight, and Management of Resources

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Pugh Center and oversee resource allocation to meet strategic objectives, i.e. budget management and monitoring of expenditures, staff development, and evaluation
  • Supervise the staff and student employees in the successful oversight and implementation of programs
  • Imbed assessment practices into Center programming to ensure impact and outcomes
  • Encourage and support co-curricular programming including collaborating with divisional offices to meet the co-curricular needs of students related to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Execute collaborative partnerships with divisional and College partners in support of the College’s academic mission through co-curricular programming and initiatives that support the growth and development of Colby students
  • Work with faculty to encourage intellectual content and academic rigor in student programming
  • Collaborate with the Class Deans to serve as a resource to the students the Center serves, and engage Deans in the life and work of the Center
  • Develop, advise, and support Pugh Center student staff (academically, professionally, and personally) and Pugh Center full-time staff who directly supervise student staff
  • Revive, convene, and direct the Pugh Center advisory council
  • Serve in the on-call rotation responding to emergency situations and student academic concerns for 2-3 weeks each year, including evenings and weekends

Collaborate and Partner

  • Develop and deliver programs that support historically underrepresented student groups on campus, and plan and implement programs that promote cultural awareness for the campus community
  • Develop strategic partnerships and relationships with key departments and offices on and off campus that bolster the work and drive the mission of the Pugh Center
  • Ensure a focus on supporting the holistic success of student leaders of the Pugh Center and affiliated programs and initiatives
  • Encourage and facilitate connections between students, faculty, staff, and alumni
  • Serve on divisional and college committees and working groups and undertake special projects as a representative of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Remain informed of best practices, engage with professional networks, and contribute to improving the experiences of Colby students from backgrounds historically underrepresented in higher education
  • Partner with other campus offices to develop infrastructure to better support needs of our increasingly diverse student body
  • Assist in the promotion and integration of engagement, mentorship, and leadership programs in collaboration with other campus partners
  • Serve on campus-wide committees and working groups as needed and perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience; Master's or terminal degree preferred in Multicultural Education, Educational Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field
  • Minimum 7 – 10 years of administrative leadership experience at an institution with progressively increased responsibility and experience addressing issues of equity, diversity, inclusion and/or social justice in a post-secondary setting
  • Strong understanding of local and national diversity issues and factors, particularly in the area of higher education
  • Knowledge of the issues facing students in today’s higher education climate, including students of color, first-generation, and low-income college students, and a proven track record of support for diverse populations
  • Experience facilitating diversity trainings and workshops
  • Track record of building partnerships and credibility with a diverse set of stakeholders
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict management, and oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Ability to identify both problems and potential solutions; connect with students and earn their trust while establishing and maintaining appropriate limits/boundaries
  • Ability to plan, develop, implement, and assess program initiatives that require effective management of resources.
  • Prior experience supervising and managing professional and student staff, including the ability to coach and train others successfully
  • Demonstrated experience in budget management as well as event and facilities management
  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends based on programming needs
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team, establish priorities, and work collaboratively as a member of a diverse community
  • Valid driver’s license required and must meet the College’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

This position has significant interaction with students, faculty, staff, families, and external constituencies.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

General open office and campus environment. Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary. Some evening and weekend work required based on programming needs.
