The University of Maine invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Education and Human Development (COEHD). The University seeks an effective leader committed to broad, equitable, and inclusive transformation through education and learning for all, at all levels, grounded in research and evidence-based policy and practice. The next COEHD dean should develop and approach opportunities strategically and will work collaboratively within COEHD, across the university, and with external partners to ensure that the College provides influence and impact in Maine and beyond.

The College of Education & Human Development leads the state in research that informs policy and practice for educators pre-K through adult learning, child and family specialists, and educational leaders. Priorities of the college include further strengthening research and graduate education, fostering a first-class undergraduate educational experience within the college, implementing the college’s commitment to diversity and equity, reinforcing positive relationships with stakeholders in the community, and partnering with key entities across the university to foster learner success broadly. The new dean will provide inspirational leadership grounded in a steady commitment to academic excellence and aligned with the University’s strategic vision and values (umaine.edu/visionandvalues/strategic-vision-and-values/). They will be able to articulate and promote a clear vision that advances the mission of the College in cooperation with the faculty, colleagues across campus and the University of Maine System, and community partners.

The College of Education & Human Development (umaine.edu/edhd/) offers four-year programs preparing elementary and secondary school teachers, as well as majors in child development and family relations, athletic training, and kinesiology and physical education. To serve needs in Maine, there is an expectation that elementary and secondary teacher preparation program enrollments will grow under the new dean’s leadership. The College’s many graduate programs, which account for more than 25% of the University’s total graduate enrollment, are offered at the certificate, master’s, specialist, and doctoral levels. The doctoral programs include preK-12 education, educational leadership, higher education, and STEM education research. The College of Education & Human Development has a long and distinguished history in community-based teacher education and has been accredited since 1961, initially by NCATE and now by CAEP. The College collaborates closely with education programs at the University’s regional campus, the University of Maine at Machias.

Founded in 1865, the University of Maine (www.umaine.edu) is the State’s Land, Sea, and Space Grant institution and its research university. It is the flagship university of the University of Maine System. The University of Maine System is the recent recipient of a $240 million challenge grant by the Harold Alfond Foundation--the largest ever to a public institution of higher education in New England--that will transform the state’s premier organization dedicated to education, research, innovation, and talent development. There is great potential for COEHD leadership in several areas of this initiative, especially its student success and retention components.

Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost, the dean is the chief executive officer of the college, responsible for academic, fiscal, strategic planning, and personnel matters. The dean guides and assists in the acquisition of state, federal, and private grants; actively participates in the university’s fundraising initiatives; and serves as the primary spokesperson for the college in its relations with diverse constituencies, both internal and external to the University of Maine.

The incoming dean will hold an earned doctorate and be qualified for appointment as a full professor with tenure in one of the College’s three schools. For additional information about COEHD and the dean position, including specific qualifications and application instructions, go to https://umaine.hiretouch.com/job-details?jobid=65273.

Screening of candidates will begin March 1, 2021, and continue until the position is filled. All interviews are

anticipated to occur remotely.

Nominations and questions about the position may be directed to the chair of the search committee: Dr. Emily Haddad, Dean, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, 207-581-1954 or Emily.Haddad@maine.edu.
