Elgin Community College seeks an educator with expertise in global studies/world history for a full-time, tenure-track position. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching the history of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and/or Latin America but will also be able to teach courses on Europe and the Mediterranean world. This position involves teaching survey courses in world history and political science; competitive candidates will demonstrate the ability to emphasize comparative and/or transnational perspectives in their approach. Strong candidates will also be able to teach international and/or comparative politics and be willing to develop specialty courses in global history and/or political science. ECC seeks a candidate with a robust teaching portfolio and significant online teaching experience.

Successful candidate is expected to 1) contribute positively to collegial culture, 2) support department, division and college activities and goals, 3) demonstrate cultural competence, 4) demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development, including discipline-specific activities and activities to enhance teaching efficacy.

Job Summary:

Full-time teaching faculty provide instruction aligned with the college's strategic goals and evaluate students' progress to facilitate achievement of their educational goals.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

1) Master Degree in History, Political Science or a related field with 18 graduate hours in History or Political Science
2) College teaching experience
3) Evidence of teaching from a global/multicultural perspective
4) Commitment to the community college mission and philosophy
5) Commitment to meeting the academic needs of non-traditional students, including first generation, older students, minority/multicultural students, non-native speakers of English
6) Significant experience teaching online and demonstrated use of instructional technology to support face-to-face classes

Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

1) PhD in History, Political Science or a related field
2) Community college teaching experience

Essential Duties:

Deliver Instruction

1. Conduct assigned classes and/or labs

2. Prepare lessons

3. Provide course syllabus (which shall include course information, grading standards, attendance policies, classroom behavioral expectations, course outline and contact information)

4. Utilize learning outcomes assessment and measures to improve learning/instruction

If a lab is involved:

5. Prepare labs

6. Enforce lab safety procedures

Evaluate Student Progress

1. Keep accurate record of student performance

2. Provide students with timely feedback

Provide Student Assistance

1. Maintain office hours and voice-mail/e-mail communication

2. Give career and academic advice

3. Refer students to student support services

4. Accommodate special needs students

Develop curriculum

1. Review/select textbooks and instructional materials

2. Develop/revise courses

3. Develop/revise degree/certificate programs

4. Review/revise course outlines

5. Participate in articulation of courses/programs
