Visiting Assistant Professor in Computer Science

Job description

The Position and Qualifications
Cornell College, a selective undergraduate liberal arts college located in Mount Vernon, Iowa, invites applications for a two-year appointment in Computer Science as a Visiting Assistant Professor or as a Visiting Lecturer beginning August 2021. A Visiting Assistant Professor must have an earned doctorate in Computer Science by August 2021. A Visiting Lecturer must have both a Master's degree in Computer Science or related field and significant professional experience. A candidate with a Ph.D. could be considered for a future tenure-track position.

Our Computer Science degree is integrated with Cornell's Ingenuity core curriculum and it builds on the strengths of our One Course At A Time schedule, in which faculty members teach and students take one course at a time in month-long terms, allowing students month-long opportunities for off-campus study, full-time internships, and research blocks. The department welcomes applications from candidates with special interests in any part of computer science. It will favor candidates who show a readiness to introduce students to opportunities that await them after graduation, for example, through collaborative research or engagement with industry.

Because Cornell College values diversity and strives to create a welcoming community in which all individuals are respected and included, the entire campus community is called upon to engage in dialogue around issues of difference, identity, and ideology. The College is committed to fostering a faculty and staff community that reflects our diverse student body. We encourage applications from candidates who share our vision for a campus that embraces differing backgrounds, viewpoints, and identities, and who will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse. (See our diversity statement here.)

Cornell College is committed to excellence in teaching. Our mentoring program supports faculty members in developing into excellent teachers. The successful candidate will be prepared to teach courses at the 100 and 200 levels. In the case that the candidate has interest and expertise, the department will also give the successful candidate opportunities to teach advanced courses. This position is responsible for teaching courses in 6 out of the 8 month-long terms.
