Sinai Health System (SHS), University Health Network (UHN) and Women’s College Hospital (WCH) Departments of Anesthesia and Pain Management are seeking an applicant to fulfill the role of Director, Medical Education in Toronto. The successful candidate must be eligible for academic appointment at the rank of Assistant/Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto. The anticipated start date will be April 2021, with the specific date to be determined based on mutual agreement.

The director position is for a 3-year term, with possibility of renewal for a second 3-year term following a successful structured review process. The incumbent will demonstrate enthusiasm for medical education, be committed to the vision of the department (excellence through collaboration, innovation, and inclusion), and possess high-level leadership, mentoring, and organizational skills. The key responsibilities will include 1) to standardize and enhance education activities and learning environment at our hospital sites; 2) assist with streamlining the education programs and to guide faculty who are interested in educational opportunities to find suitable educational roles within the hospital and the university; and 3) ensure compliance and enhance integration of departmental education activities with the university. The director will report directly to the Anesthesiologist-in-Chief and site chiefs.

The specific goals for this role include liaising with site education leads to identify high-level priority areas in education and to develop strategic objectives that provide a roadmap for the development and implementation of education and teaching activities at the department level; liaising between the department and university (including the MD program academies) to ensure that goals of education are being met; to help to create an optimal learning environment, including fostering a culture of equity and diversity; to work with the university to help review and disseminate the faculty Teaching Evaluation Scores (TES), to be a point of contact for any trainee appeals processes; to help establish a departmental education committee with representation from education leads at all sites and develop terms of reference for the committee; and to serve on the department executive committee as the education representative.

The successful candidate will provide clinical care at their respective site, including supervision and teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows. Non-clinical time will be provided for this administrative position. Additional non-clinical time will be awarded according to a merit-based system. On-call services will be provided in rotation.

The successful candidate must have a medical degree, postgraduate fellowship training, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in anesthesia (or equivalent) and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The successful candidate must have proven clinical skills at a high level, evidence of demonstrated excellence in research and/or education and a commitment to teaching medical students, residents, and fellows. Compensation will depend on the amount of clinical work performed and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and within the usual range for an anesthesiologist in the Province of Ontario ($300,000-500,000 per annum).
