Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Program Director of CNS' Chemical and Biological Weapons Nonproliferation Program (CBWNP), the Research Associate will contribute substantively to the research, training, and educational activities of the program, as well as support administration and implementation of grant awards and associated projects. These activities will include: conducting independent technical- and policy-based open source domain research in Mandarin Chinese and Russian languages; translating and assembling native language findings in English language reports; supporting analysis of findings as part of the CBWNP team; preparing educational materials and assisting with logistics for related training and education programs; and organizing workshops and similar events.

Essential Functions
• Conduct native language (Mandarin Chinese, Russian) research and write and edit English language reports on a wide range of nonproliferation-related topics such as: Chinese dual-use technology development; Russian dual-use technology development; motivational indicators/factors influencing dual-use application of technologies; and identification/enforcement of corresponding policy measures and export controls.

General Responsibilities
• Prepare educational materials and provide logistics support for related training, education programs, and workshops.
• Train and support Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs) assigned to the CBWNP team.
• Support development of CBWNP research and awareness-building opportunities by identifying and confirming sponsor needs and requirements, as well as developing and drafting proposals, grant applications, and research methodologies.

Education
• M.A. / Ph.D. degree in nonproliferation and terrorism studies or related technical field (e.g., chemistry, biology, genomics, public health), or equivalent work/field experience. Specialized coursework in nonproliferation studies preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Fluency (written and oral) in Mandarin Chinese and Russian language.
• Excellent organizational, administrative, analytical, research, writing, and copy-editing skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related programs and tools.
• Excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills, including international communication with students and visitors who are using English as a second language.
• Capable of multi-tasking and working in a challenging, intense, and dynamic deadline-oriented environment.
• Ability to work well with others.
• Willingness and ability to adapt to changing technologies and systems.
• Willingness and ability to comply with Institute policies, procedures and mandates.

Experience
• Previous experience working on nonproliferation-related projects in the chemical and biological weapons nonproliferation domain.
• Previous native language research experience on Chinese and Russian technologies that may be relevant to chemical and biological weapons nonproliferation.

Physical Demands
