Shenandoah Conservatory, one of the country’s leading centers for collaborative work across the performing arts, is seeking nominations and applications for an exceptional pianist, teacher, recruiter, and savvy 21st century musician to join the Keyboard faculty. This full-time and career-contract track position begins August 2021.

Responsibilities:

Building on exceptional musicianship and an orientation to mentorship, the chosen candidate will help to advance the Conservatory’s reputation as an inclusive and premier place of study where artists from diverse backgrounds actively engage around innovative and collaborative work.

Specifically, the desired candidate will:

  • Provide mentorship to both undergraduate and graduate piano students, teaching both applied and accompanying lessons, and offering chamber coaching;
  • Teach courses or seminars in the field of expertise as appropriate (such as The 21st Century Musician);
  • Build the piano studio, successfully recruiting highly talented students, and strategically employ media and 21st century tools to effectively build listeners/followers;
  • Actively contribute to curriculum discussions and a faculty community that is oriented towards excellence, collaboration, and innovation, including forward-oriented approaches to career preparation of music performance students;
  • Maintain a high-profile performance career while being intensely engaged in Conservatory and University life, including contributing to school-wide conversations and committees, and participating in division meetings, auditions, and recruitment activities; and
  • Actively contribute to the Conservatory’s commitment to Inclusion, Diversity and Equity.

Qualifications: 

Required and minimum qualifications include the following:

  • An excellent pianist with extensive performing experience and a national or international profile;
  • An excellent teacher with at least some experience of teaching within a conservatory or university setting;
  • Ability and interest to effectively attract and recruit students;
  • Possesses an interest in chamber music, with willingness to teach solo piano, chamber music, collaborative piano (in all its forms) and piano accompanying;
  • Demonstrated ability to employ media (whether social media, YouTube, and/or streaming services) to effectively build listeners/followers;
  • Demonstrated orientation towards collaborative work;
  • An ability to contribute to the Conservatory’s commitment to inclusion, diversity and equity;
  • Possession of a DMA or equivalent professional experience; and
  • Eligibility to work in the United States.

Shenandoah's History

Dayton, Virginia was Shenandoah’s home for 85 years. In 1875, the university was founded there as Shenandoah High School. Over the next 85 years, the institution changed names six times but always kept “Shenandoah” as part of its name. In 1946, the school nearly closed due to financial concerns. Rather than closing the school, university president Dr. Forrest S. Racey oversaw the move to Winchester. The last classes in Dayton began in the fall of 1959 with an enrollment of 159 students. Shenandoah opened its doors in Winchester in September 1960.

 

In Winchester, the school began to thrive and, in 1991, became Shenandoah University.
