Position Summary

Position: The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Michigan State University seeks a faculty member with experience and expertise in sensory science and food product development. This position is a full-time, 12-month fixed-term (non-tenure accruing) appointment at the level of Assistant Professor with 40% research, 40% extension, 15% teaching, and 5% service. The position is available on May 16, 2021.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate is expected to attract externally-funded competitive grants to support their sensory science program, and will plan and execute the appropriate sensory tests for food industry, provide analysis and written reports, and schedule and supervise sensory laboratory operations. Priority will be on Michigan plant materials for sensory and product development activities. This person will be responsible for managing and maintaining the sensory facilities (http://www.fshn.msu.edu/facilities/the_food_sensory_laboratory), hiring and supervising student workers, securing external funding to support the sensory program, and publishing research in peer-reviewed journals. Furthermore, this person will be an integral part of the MSU Product Center (http://productcenter.msu.edu/) as their sensory specialist. In addition, this person will teach an undergraduate course (currently FSC 310: Sensory Analysis and Consumer Research), have the ability to advise graduate students, and provide service to the professional and practice communities.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Sensory Science, Food Science, or relate

Minimum Requirements

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Sensory Science, Food Science, or a closely related field, good track records in publications and grantsmanship, with a background in food industry preferred. The candidate must also have excellent communication, leadership and networking skills to be an effective educator and work effectively with the food industry and appropriate agencies. Commitment to high teaching and student mentoring standards is required. A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the ability to work collaboratively across agricultural disciplines is a must.
