Postdoctoral ScholarsPrimary Function of Organizational Unit :
The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology is dedicated to the discovery, development, and promotion of biomedical knowledge involving cell biology and the anatomical sciences of Gross Anatomy, Developmental Anatomy, Histology, and Neuroanatomy. Through this mission, we aim to improve human health through innovative educational programs and excellence in research and scholarly activities in a dynamic and diverse learning community.
The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology is located in the Brody Medical Sciences Building on the west campus of East Carolina University and has fifteen faculty, eight staff, two research fellows, two office support staff, and six to ten doctoral students. Our faculty are actively involved with research areas that include signal transduction; stem cells; educational models and distance learning; cellular senescence and determinants of radiosensitivity in cancer; rearrangements of the cytoskeleton that occur during spermatogenesis; role of delta-catenin, presenilin and cadherins in synaptic remodeling and in cancer; function of tight junctions and claudins in ionic and tissue homeostasis; hyaluronan-CD44 interactions and their influence on BMP-initiated Smad signaling and other signaling pathways; and CD44-initiated signaling pathways that result in enhanced MMP production and extracellular degradation.
Throughout the brief history of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology has had an active role in training graduate students. Our former students now hold prestigious postdoctoral, faculty, and professional positions throughout the United States. In addition to our graduate program, we provide instruction to medical, nursing, physical therapy, and physician assistant students.Job Duties :
The postdoctoral scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research in the discipline of Cell and Molecular Biology. Specifically, our laboratory is investigating the patho-physiological mechanisms that underlie tissue fragility in patients affected by ectodermal dysplasias (ankyloblepharon ectodermal dysplasia and clefting [AEC] and ectrodactyly ectodermal dysplasia and clefting [EEC]). For these studies, we use patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC). These cells are then differentiated into defined somatic cell lineages to investigate alterations in the transcriptome and proteome. The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for analyzing RNAseq data, and for performing follow-up experiments to validate and extend the transcriptome data. These experiments will involve the use of basic cell and molecular biology techniques, such as Western blotting and qRT-PCR. The postdoctoral fellow will also be responsible for analyzing mouse and human tissue samples using immunostaining and microscopy imaging. Additional duties include: hypothesis development, literature review, collection of pilot data, report writing, and supervising of undergraduate research students and graduate research students, overseeing data collection procedures, supervising experimental procedures, review of data for quality control, supervision of data entry/data analysis, analysis of research hypothesis using descriptive and multivariate statistics, and the development of independent and collaborative presentations and publications. Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.
Approximately 85% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to performing research, preparing grants/manuscripts, and data reporting.
Approximately 15% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to managing the day-to-day activity of undergraduate and graduate research students in the laboratory.Minimum Education/Experience :
