Job Details
•Developing and reviewing the College’s budgets;
•Reviewing and approving purchase and reimbursement requests;
•Reviewing and approving faculty conference research and professional development travel reimbursements;
•Providing oversight of start-up funds and research grant funds;
•Reviewing and approving the use of gift funds as per terms of the relevant gift;
•Planning for the allocation of funds to support special projects and events;
•Planning for the allocation of funds to support faculty-led study abroad programs and monitoring their use;
•Monitoring of the use of classroom, laboratory, and office space by HCLAS departments and programs;
•Administering the annual HCLAS Faculty Research Development Grant process and semi-annual Transformative Learning Grant process;
•Reviewing and approving changes in class schedules and participating in the approval process for per-capita and independent study courses; providing oversight of the efficient development and implementation of the course schedule for undergraduate and graduate classes in all four divisions of the College in all academic terms;
•Reviewing and approving full- and part-time faculty load reports;
•Reviewing and approving supplemental and one-time payments to faculty and answering faculty questions about load and pay;
•Liaising and/or leading committees and task forces as assigned by the dean; and reviewing and approving contracts related to HCLAS faculty projects to submit to the Office of Legal Affairs for legal review.
The Assistant or Associate Dean collaborates with the HCLAS Dean and members of the Dean’s Office administrative team, the Provost’s Office, especially the Associate Provost for Budget and Finance, HCLAS faculty and especially department chairs, members of the Hofstra College staff, colleagues in the Division of Budget and Finance, the Office of Academic Records, the Office of Development, the Office of the Bursar, the Facilities and Plant Division, the Division of Information Technology, the Office of Legal Affairs, and others in supporting the needs of students and faculty.
The Assistant or Associate Dean attends Admissions events that occasionally occur on weekends, meets regularly with the Dean to review short-term and long-term projects, meets regularly with Dean’s Office administrators to review HCLAS initiatives and projects. The Assistant or Associate Dean is called upon to represent the Dean from time to time at various meetings and events and collaborates extensively with all members of the Dean’s Office and with administration, faculty, and staff on special projects and on ad hoc committees and task forces. The Assistant or Associate Dean regularly attends meetings of the HCLAS Dean’s Council (meetings with all Department Chairs), communicates regularly by email with individual HCLAS department chairs and groups of HCLAS department chairs, and regularly attends college-wide faculty meetings. The Assistant or Associate Dean for Budget and Finance is supervised directly by the Dean of Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and supervises the senior assistant secretary.
This is an onsite position; work for this role is performed on campus.
The usual schedule for this position is Monday - Friday. This position is currently working 4 days on alternating weeks.
Qualifications:•A master’s degree in a liberal arts discipline or in higher education policy, or leadership required.
• 3+ years of experience in budgeting and planning, or other leadership, in the context of not-for-profit higher education in North America.
•Demonstrated effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with an ability to work with diverse constituents with professionalism and diplomacy, and to exercise good judgment and discretion with sensitive and confidential information.
•Must be able to manage multiple projects under demanding deadlines.
•Candidate is expected to collaborate with faculty and have an understanding of the nature of liberal arts education within the landscape of not-for-profit higher education in the USA
•Knowledge of MSWord, Excel, Outlook, Blackboard, Banner preferred, as well as the ability to learn other computer programs as needed.
