Job Summary/Basic Function:

The School of Engineering at Liberty University invites applicants for faculty at the rank of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in our new Civil Engineering Department. The school’s areas of research interest include Solid Mechanics (e.g., fatigue, fracture, metal processing, damage mechanics, and constitutive modeling), Thermal Sciences (e.g., energy systems, renewable energy, combustion, fluid dynamics), Materials (metallurgy, computational materials, materials characterization), Computational Mechanics (e.g., numerical methods, finite element analysis, etc.) and Design (e.g., materials design, product design, systems design, environment and sustainability, robust design and uncertainty quantification). Candidates in other areas will also be considered. Successful candidates will be expected to develop internationally-recognized, externally-funded, sustainable research programs and to make significant contributions to the department’s teaching and service responsibilities.

The Liberty University School of Engineering is comprised of five departments with an additional Computational Science and Engineering Department being a virtual department in which faculty from the other departments can partake of Computational Science and Engineering. The LUSOE offers four ABET-accredited undergraduate programs as well as graduate studies leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. In addition, LUSOE offers undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. distance learning programs as well as residential programs. The LUSOE is just starting to grow as LU has invested in growing the engineering program.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering. Candidates are expected to have demonstrated the ability to conduct research at the highest level and to have a record of, or the promise for, outstanding teaching, supervision of students, and service to the LUSOE. Applicants must apply online by submitting a cover letter, curriculum vitae, names and contact information for at least three professional references, and one-page summaries for each of their research, teaching, and service plans. Candidates need to clearly indicate in the cover letter their area of interest (Solid Mechanics, Thermal Sciences, Materials, Computational, or Design). The faculty are expected to conduct state-of-the-art research, teach undergraduate and/or graduate level courses, and serve the LUSOE. The candidate in this position will help implement a new civil engineering program within the School of Engineering. Initial duties include teaching various courses within the civil engineering curriculum. A transition to teaching the upper level civil engineering courses will occur as the program matures. Engineering topics for the structural engineering specialization will include (but are not limited to) statics, dynamics, strength of materials, structural analysis, and steel structure design. Engineering topics for the geotechnical engineering specialization will include (but are not limited to) statics, dynamics, soil mechanics, and geotechnical engineering. Candidates will also help teach the civil engineering laboratory courses and senior capstone courses as needed.

Faculty will participate in the process of developing undergraduate engineering curriculum. In this capacity, faculty are expected to:

-Assist in curriculum review and development
-Develop syllabi and review textbooks for adoption
-Create projects designed to enhance lectures
-Develop laboratories to support the engineering curriculum
-Read and stay abreast of current topics in engineering
-Propose and develop new courses as determined appropriate by the faculty
-Actively participate in and support SACS and ABET accreditation preparation

In terms of graduate education, faculty are expected to:
-Partake in graduate committees
-Garner funds for M.S./Ph.D. students
-Advise M.S./Ph.D. students
-Teach graduate level courses
-Propose and develop new courses as determined appropriate by the faculty

Faculty are required by the university to:
-Teach the contracted load
-Maintain office hours
-Mentor and advise students
-Keep timely records of grades, grade papers, and perform other administrative duties as needed

Faculty will perform other duties as assigned and actively participate in university assemblies and activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

The candidate must hold a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates having a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a specialization in either structural or geotechnical engineering and having passed the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam.

In addition, an exemplary record of scholarship, external research support, and teaching is expected for appointment to a faculty position.

Work Hours:

This is a residential position. Class schedules will be determined on a semester basis by the associate dean and dean of the school.
