Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Transportation Engineering and Public Policy

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering of the Samueli School of Engineering and the Department of Public Policy of the Luskin School of Public Affairs at UCLA invite applications for a joint tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level.

We seek a transportation/infrastructure scholar who works at the intersection of engineering and policy, with an explicit focus on equity - both by increasing transportation benefits enjoyed by Black and other marginalized travelers and by decreasing the harms transportation systems disproportionately impose on Black and disadvantaged communities. The successful candidate will contribute to the curricula in both departments and will present a compelling research agenda on transportation equity and race, defined broadly to include disparate impacts and access, systematic under-investment in infrastructure and associated services, as well as discrimination and racism.

We seek candidates who will contribute to the expansion and integration of the transportation-related research and teaching of nearly four dozen transportation scholars and multiple transportation research and degree programs across UCLA, including many of whom work on various dimensions of transportation equity. We are especially interested in those who will contribute to the transportation strengths and strategic priorities of UCLA, including Access to Opportunities, New Mobility, Public Transit, Sustainable & Resilient Transportation, Terminals & Infrastructure, Traffic, Transportation & Communities, and Transportation Finance. The successful candidate will enjoy this rich scholarly environment as well as research support from at least five campus research centers: the Institute of Transportation Studies, Smart Grid Energy Research Center, Luskin Center for Innovation, Garrick Institute for the Risk Sciences, and Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies.

This faculty search is a partnership among the Departments of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Public Policy and the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies, as part of the campus-wide effort to rise to the challenge of racial and social justice at UCLA, sponsored by the Office of the Chancellor and the Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost.

Bunche, was established to develop and strengthen African American Studies through five primary organizational branches: research, academic programs, library and media center, special projects, and publications.

Applicants must hold an engineering degree at BS or higher levels and an earned PhD in a field related to civil engineering, environmental engineering, or public policy by the date of hire. The expected start date is in the summer of 2021 or winter of 2022.
