Scope of Job:
To assist in the operation of student activities programs and events. The program coordinator will be responsible for civic engagement programs, exercising independent judgment and authority as required. Responsible for all phases of the program, including budget recommendations, program selection, staff supervision, recommendations for future planning, and innovation.


Description of Duties:
• Oversees and manages Civic Engagement and Welcome Weeks events and activities.
• Supervises and manages the day to day activities and personnel of the assigned program.
• Develops and supervises the implementation of multiple projects or programs.
• Participates in budget planning and is responsible for controlling expenditures in accordance with budget allocations for the program.
• Coordinates the various activities of Welcome Weeks, Civic Engagement and other Pride and Traditions events and activities.
• Directly coordinates and advises an active fee-funded organization, Civic Engagement Alliance. This role is highly involved in advising the student leaders in executive and board roles, serves as a liaison between Student Activities and partners with campus and academic departments.
• Participate in the implementation and staffing of large-scale events requiring the presence of Student Activities staff such as, but not limited to, Best Week Ever, Spirit Week, Week of Welcome, Homecoming and Charreada. Frequent nights and weekends required.
• Assist with creating a strong marketing plan to ensure that branding and departmental expectations are being met for event planning.
• Represents department in official functions.
• Reviews program records and reports of activities and recommends modifications to methods or procedures as required.
• Drafts brochures, letters, agendas, and contracts.
• May plan, develop, organize, and coordinate research and survey designs.
• Attends meetings, conferences, and seminars related to the program’s mission and goals.
• Provides appropriate reports as required for the project or program.
• Conducts formal training or gives instruction regarding program policies and procedures.
• Develops, cultivates, and maintains working relationships with internal/external departments/agencies and other organizations associated with and/or receiving benefit from the program.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

General direction from the assigned supervisor.

Supervises assigned staff.

Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited university

Licenses/Certifications:
None.

Required Experience:
• Three (3) years of experience performing closely related duties, including program planning/coordination or related experience in the appropriate field of the program, or
• One (1) year of the required experience with a Master’s degree, or
• Five (5) years of the required experience with an Associate Degree or 60 hours of College Credit, or
• Seven (7) years of the required experience with a High School Diploma or equivalent.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Normal office or classroom or outside environment. Some travel and weekend work is required. Particular project or program may require ability to drive a car for local or distant travel for consultation, training, meetings, or on site demonstrations. Must be able to bend, stoop, reach and lift for retrieving/maintaining files and for setting up multimedia equipment. Must be able to move between buildings, offices and classrooms.

Ability to interact in a professional manner with faculty, staff, students and the public. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated interpersonal skills. Independent decision making and problem solving ability. Must demonstrate effective project promotion skills, and, the ability to develop and maintain strong working relations with internal and external agencies and entities.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
