Departmental Overview

The Engineering Biology Research Consortium (EBRC) is a non-profit, public-private partnership dedicated to bringing together an inclusive community committed to advancing engineering biology to address national and global needs. We showcase cutting-edge research in engineering biology, identify pressing challenges and opportunities in research and application, articulate compelling research roadmaps and programs to address them, and provide timely access to other key developments in engineering biology. This position involves managing a significant, independent academic or research program. Formulates program strategies and goals. Plans, directs and controls program budget and other related resources.

Responsibilities

OVERVIEW:

The Executive Director takes leadership role in independently managing and developing a large, complex academic or research program of high visibility. Develops a vision and establishes the agenda to achieve research and other objectives. The incumbent oversees all elements of program administration. Catalyzes new research programs and collaborates across multiple research groups. Provides leadership in and engagement with the industry, policymakers, funding agencies, and research and education communities. Reporting to the CEO, the Executive Director formulates program strategies and goals, directs long-term planning, and develops policies and procedures. Develops multiple streams of funding. The role will maintain a highly qualified core staff and is considered a subject matter expert on campus as well as recognized as an expert externally in the field.
  • Designs and develops major research, education, and visioning program components, oversees execution of programs once funded.
  • Develops and executes strategic plans for financing program activities and ensuring ongoing sustainability of the program.
  • In coordination with the CEO, develops and maintains liaison with Board of Directors. Represents the program to the Board, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Leads working groups, committees, membership meetings.
  • Designs research programs. Develops and leads proposals. Oversees extramural award programs, projects, milestones and reporting. Presents seminars and workshops and participates with faculty on research.
  • Plans, directs and controls program budget and manages financial, HR, technical and other supporting resources.
  • Assesses program's effectiveness, and recommends changes to program's content,
    policies and strategic goals accordingly.

Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated academic background and recognized expertise in selected area of research.
  • Expert oral and written communication skills.
  • Leadership experience in academic, industrial, and/or government agencies.
  • Demonstrated expertise building collaborations between academia, industrial and/or governmental agencies.
  • Demonstrated expertise with program building within a leading academic institution and administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving social impact through research.
  • Expert ability to work with dynamic and diverse group of scientists, engineers, faculty, staff and students.
  • Expert fundraising experience.
  • Expert negotiation skills.
  • PhD in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
