Position Highlights:

The School of Plant Sciences at the University of Arizona has an opening for an Assistant/Associate Extension Specialist and Professor in Weed Science. The position is a 12-month 100% Extension appointment with eligibility for continuing status (permanent employment equivalent to tenure). The purpose of this position is to provide leadership in the development and implementation of an effective Extension education and applied research in weed science that supports the diverse cropping systems industries in Arizona. The position will conduct an effective Extension education program and develop relevant applied research addressing problems that face Arizona’s crop producers. The position will be based at the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, Arizona, with the expectation of statewide program responsibilities and travel.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The incumbent will integrate innovative approaches, take initiative, demonstrate professional expertise, and foster a working relationship with colleagues and clientele statewide. Activities will include developing and conducting statewide educational programs in weed management, and deliver outreach such as educational presentations, Extension publications, trade journal articles, web-based applications, and the use of social media. The incumbent is expected to be alert to problems in the field, be prompt and responsive to inquiries and requests from the agricultural community, have excellent communication skills and be capable of interacting with a diverse community of farmers, county agents, public agencies, and the general public on topics such as weed identification, biology, management, and control. The incumbent should have the capacity to navigate an array of interactions with individuals, groups, and various agencies concerned with Arizona’s agricultural, rangeland, wild­land, right-of-way, urban agricultural areas, and other managed landscapes.

The incumbent is expected to develop an applied research program to address weed management problems in Arizona, a program that can be directed toward a variety of crops including, but not limited to, cotton, alfalfa, small grains, miscellaneous forages, fruits, nuts, vegetables, ornamentals, and/or various other specialty crops. The exact nature of the research program is determined by the incumbent, as long as it falls within the general scope of weed science, and it is directly applicable to improving Extension efforts in Arizona weed management. The incumbent must have the disciplinary expertise to interact effectively with academic colleagues, and also be an active member of multi-disciplinary Extension working groups focused on agricultural production and management.

To support program activities, the successful candidate is expected to write grants and obtain competitive extramural funding from federal, state, local, commodity association, and/or industry resources. Excellence will be demonstrated by measured impacts of the Extension program, and by contributions to the discipline of weed science. Overall, the candidate’s program is expected to provide leadership and national recognition for its excellence in Cooperative Extension and related scholarly activity in weed science, with emphasis on solving problems of importance to the state.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications are 1) Ph.D. in Weed Science, Agronomy or related field at time of hire, and 2) a valid driver’s license, which is required to accommodate statewide travel for Extension program delivery or research activities and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy..
