Radiation Safety Officer (RSO)/Hazardous Materials Programs Manager Job Number Full/Part Time Schedule Salary 22366298 Full Time 8AM - 5PM $86,500 - $170,500 Position Information Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of EH&S, the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO)/Hazardous Waste and Environmental Programs Manager performs work of considerable complexity in developing, implementing and managing effective programs within the radiation/laser safety, hazardous waste and environmental compliance purview. Represents the UCR radiation safety program at local campus, UC systemwide, and professional organization meetings and conferences. Works directly with local and state regulatory agencies in matters related to radiation safety. In addition, provides supervision, direction, and training to staff in Hazardous Waste and Environmental Programs. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of regulatory requirements for regulated waste management; hazardous waste and environmental programs (air quality, water quality and remediation). Actively participates in the evaluation, development and improvement of regulated waste data management systems to maintain compliance, and measure and improve performance. Ensures internal controls, safety procedures, and protocols are maintained in all facets of responsibility. Provides additional operational support to EH&S as necessary. Education Education Requirements Degree Requirement Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Required BS or MS in Health Physics or other engineering/science-related discipline (preferred) or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience with extensive coursework in health physics. Certifications Certification Requirement Certified Health Physicist Preferred Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) Preferred
Experience Experience Requirement 8 - 13 years of related experience. Required Previous supervisory/managerial experience. Preferred Experience in managing a radiation safety program at an academic institution Preferred
Minimum Requirements Good management skills to effectively lead and direct subordinate staff who are assigned duties in different programs; skills to effectively integrate several highly regulated subject and program areas.
Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of EH&S technical requirements, logistics, materials and operations, rules, regulations, and laws.
Solid written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills, including political acumen and skill to effectively communicate with diverse constituencies and senior management.
Solid skills to appropriately and efficiently respond to and direct the response to emergencies and critical situations, including follow-up evaluation and critique of response efficacy; recommend, develop, and implement changes to emergency response as required.
Solid skills to create, develop, and implement EH&S projects/programs.
Advanced analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within budget and time constraints.
Advanced or expert knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards, guidelines and, as appropriate, recommend organization policy.
Preferred Qualifications Advanced skill in mentoring or overseeing the work of other EH&S technical and professional staff.
