22-Jan-2021 Close All Job SummaryThe Campus Controller's Office (CCO) at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Technical Operations Accountant! This full-time position reports to the Technical Operations Manager within CCO and works closely with campus departmental finance and accounting staff as well as system offices. This position maintains the accounting structure (known as chartfields) within the Finance System for the Boulder campus and ensures that all requests to modify chartfields are fully researched and vetted to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance with all applicable standards and guidelines. This is considered a developmental position working with accounting infrastructure. As the incumbent progresses in skill level, job duties will become more sophisticated and varied.

We provide oversight, assistance and training in financial stewardship for the campus.What Your Key Responsibilities Will BeMaintain Accounting Structure in Finance System
  • Maintain the accounting structure in the Finance System and evaluate each change to that structure to make sure it is in compliance with NACUBO (National Association of College and University Business Officers), GASB (Governmental Accounting Standards Board), and GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) standards and guidelines, as well as the accounting policies and practices of the University of Colorado, specifically.
  • Advise and mentor departments regarding the creation and maintenance of departmental chartfields. Chartfields are the accounting structure of the University’s Finance System. How chartfields are maintained in the Finance System affects the University’s SNP (Statement of Net Position) and SRECNP (Statement of Revenues, Expenses, and Changes in Net Position) financial reports.
  • Ensure that the accounting structure remains in compliance with accounting standards mentioned above ensures the integrity of the accounting data for the Boulder Campus and ensures that financial data correctly maps to the SNP and SRECNP reports. It is therefore vital for each change to the chartfields to be thoroughly researched and carefully considered.
Process Improvement
  • Continue to document and update procedures handled by this position. Work on improving processes to eliminate redundancy of effort and streamline documentation/information flow, including utilizing queries and/or analytical tools to facilitate decision-making.
Financial Integrity
  • Create and utilize various monthly reports and queries to identify and resolve problematic accounting transactions.
  • Conduct various account reconciliations. Manage annual certifications for specialized journal processes.
Other Duties as Assigned
  • May assist in the provisioning of access roles, creating reports, testing new or updated software, or other assigned duties.

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, information systems, or a related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
What You Will Need
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn GASB, GAAP, NACUBO accounting principles and guidelines.
  • A professional demeanor with technical accounting abilities.
  • Analytical thinking and the ability to recognize and question unusual situations.
  • Ability to analyze work duties and improve them.
  • Attention to detail and problem solving skills are essential.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel, is required.
  • Familiarity/knowledge of Microsoft Access is a plus.
  • Ability to learn and use new software systems.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and meet deadlines and work independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with varying levels of authority.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • Desire to work with accounting systems technology and be involved in system process improvements.
  • Experience with, or interest in learning, utilizing and building queries and a basic understanding of SQL.
  • Familiarity/knowledge of PeopleSoft or related enterprise accounting system is a plus.
