The Director will continue to build a new phase for Research Computing based on its strong regional and national reputation, through continual innovations in the Boulder campus’ cyberinfrastructure (CI), strengthening the CI for the other CU campuses (Anschutz Medical campus, CU Denver, and CU Colorado Springs), and continuing to serve as the leading actor in the CU Boulder-founded Rocky Mountain Advanced Computing Consortium (RMACC), participating in national industry organizations, and collaborating with colleagues across the nation on federal research activities.

Responsibilities span three areas:
  • Leadership of the campus cyberinfrastructure.
  • Campus leadership in data-intensive research and teaching, as Co-Executive Director of the Center for Research Data and Digital Scholarship (CRDDS).
  • Bring to the campus CI a leading national and regional presence in academic, federal, and private sectors.
The Director reports to the CIO as a member of the CIO’s senior team. Dotted line reporting relationships to the Dean of the University Libraries and the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation signify the high degree of commitment by campus senior leadership to the ongoing success and support of this position and of Research Computing. The Research Computing organization overseen by this position includes two Associate Directors, and 13 employees. In addition, the Director has joint oversight of CRDDS operations and staff.

The Director leads and helps set standards for the governance and technical architecture of the campus cyberinfrastructure. The Director coordinates computing services related to research computing across the central IT organization and the campus which is so critical to the growing use of the cyberinfrastructure in teaching and learning across the curriculum. What We Can OfferBase annual salary range for this position is $185,000 to $210,000.   • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Either a Master’s or terminal degree from an accredited college or university.
  • 5 years of progressively significant management and leadership experience in research computing, of which a minimum of three years is in higher education.
What You Will Need
  • Demonstrated success in participating in cyberinfrastructure awards funded through federal agencies.
  • Deep understanding of computing and data services in support of the research enterprise locally and nationally.
  • Strong collaboration skills, including the ability to gather input from a wide variety of diverse constituencies and to effectively discuss this input with stakeholders, colleagues, and/or clients in order to formulate strategic direction.
  • Understanding of how to communicate the value and direction of research IT to campus stakeholders, in research and in the use of the campus CI in teaching.
  • Ability to effectively lead and manage work groups.
  • Proven knowledge and ability to maintain currency of emerging national CI issues related to goals and priorities of the university.
  • Experience and active participation in national and global CI groups and ongoing relationships with various funding agencies.
  • Proven commitment to excellent customer-service, with ability to work independently and with great levels of responsibility.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • A Doctoral Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience in teaching.
  • A record of progressive achievements in externally funded research, published in peer-reviewed vehicles, in a scholarly field, in particular in a STEM area.
