Position Summary:

UCI Student Housing serves roughly 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students in six on-campus housing communities that include residence halls, theme houses, and apartments. Comprehensive Residence Life programs, Dining, and other support services are tailored to the needs of each community. Student Housing is part of the Auxiliary Services arm of UCI Student Affairs, and partners with campus colleagues to support the academic success and well-being of students.

Under the supervision of the Assistant Custodial Supervisor the incumbent performs semi-skilled and skilled cleaning, housekeeping and/or general maintenance duties for the majority of their time which requires a greater degree of training, skill, independence of action, physical effort and/or experience found at the custodial level. Incumbent operates vacuum cleaners, buffers, shampoo machines, wet/dry vacs, waxers, and lifts, floor scrubbing and/or polishing machines during stripping, waxing, buffing and other related cleaning operations. Makes reports on building and equipment needs; have security responsibility for one or more assigned areas, may assist in set up and take down of special equipment. Ability to speak, read and write English to facilitate direct communication with staff and residents is required. Incumbent is responsible for the security and maintenance of master keys and assigned equipment. May act as work leader for a group of less than five custodians. Responsibilities may include weekend work during opening and closing as well as the conference season. May also include afterhours emergency response and cleaning responsibilities.

Compensation Range:

Hourly: $18.17 - $20.49

Custodial or related cleaning experience.

Valid driver's license.

Previous demonstrated responsibility with building and key security.

Skill to operate vacuum cleaners, buffers, wet/dry vacuums, carpet shampooers, and other floor care equipment.

Ability to safely load and unload trash receptacles.

Ability to sweep, mop dust, polish and perform semi-skilled housekeeping and general maintenance duties hanging of blinds and draperies) which require greater degree of training, skill, independence of action, and physical effort and or experience.

Ability to act as a work leader for a small group of less than four custodians or casual staff.

Will act as Assistant Custodial Supervisor in case of absence.

Skills to organize many tasks, determine priority and independently complete detailed skills. Demonstrate ability to maintain diplomacy in difficult situations to maintain confidentiality, and to conduct one's self in a professional manner.

Ability to participate in work related activities as a team player.

Skill to communicate verbally and through written form.

Able to give information and instructions to a diverse group of people.

Skill to submit report in written form.

Working knowledge of institutional furnishing, floor coverings and window treatments.

Working knowledge of custodial equipment and chemicals.

Skill to prepare and conduct inĀ­ service training for custodial personnel.

Must be able to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing for the purpose of instruction and record keeping


Skill to use a computer and email. Basic understanding of inventory control.

Special Conditions Required:

Must be available for some overtime and weekend work, willing to respond to after-hours emergencies, work location and schedule may change based on department needs. Must be able to climb stairs and able to lift 50 lbs.
