The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences encompasses diverse disciplines in research extension and teaching. The department’s mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil, and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, devise effective and sustainable crop production systems, devise effective and sustainable soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings; and disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed turf, biofuels and fiber in North Carolina, the nation and the world.

Essential Job Duties:

The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University is pleased to announce recruitment for a tenured or tenure-track Associate Professor with a formal appointment in Extension (100%).

The successful candidate will have Extension educational responsibilities for cotton in North Carolina to include support of cotton producers, county agents, consultants, NCDA&CS regional agronomists, retail distribution, and others in the cotton production industry. Job duties will include working independently and in a team with existing cotton research and Extension faculty at NC State University to develop recommendations, produce the annual Cotton Information book, deliver technical training to producers and county agents, troubleshoot problems in production, and develop relationships that benefit the cotton production industry, North Carolina State University, and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Technical information will be delivered by a combination of print and electronic means, as well as through field days, farm visits, grower meetings, and training of county agents, growers, and consultants. These activities will result in the writing of extension publications (electronic and print), which may sometimes be collaborative with other research and Extension faculty.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct a collaborative applied research program with other North Carolina State University cotton faculty to support the Extension activities with an emphasis on on-farm trials focusing on cotton variety evaluations and other cultural practices in cotton production. They will be expected to work closely with faculty in other departments to assist in dissemination of integrated pest management strategies to growers and other industry clientele. Generation of external funding to support the program will be expected. Data from the research program that advance the science of cotton production will be presented at state, regional and national symposia, and meetings, which will also provide opportunities for professional development.

The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to graduate education by means such as serving on graduate committees, serving as advisor or co-advisor of graduate students, and assisting graduate students with publishing their work in appropriate scientific journals.

This position will be housed at the Upper Coastal Plain Research Station near Rocky Mount, NC in order to best serve the majority of cotton growers in North Carolina.

Minimum Experience and Education:

PhD in agronomy or a related discipline with a minimum of five (5) years of extension and applied research experience in the Southeastern U.S. cotton production.

Preferred Qualifications:

The experience in applied research should include on-farm cotton variety evaluations and large plot research. Preference will be given to candidates with an outstanding record of service to the cotton industry.

Required License(s) or Certification(s):

This position may be required to travel to and from field sites, research stations, and NC State campus. This position may also be required to drive a program truck to pull heavy farm equipment.
