About the Department:

The Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) at North Carolina State University is one of the largest interdisciplinary physical science departments in the nation. MEAS offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in Atmospheric Science/Meteorology, Geology, and Marine Science.

This position will work in a unit that monitors water quality in situ instruments at remote locations in NC.

Essential Job Duties:

  • The primary purpose of the Research Specialist position is to oversee lab and field operations as well as the data collection and archiving for the RiverNet monitoring program. The RiverNet Program monitors water quality in the Neuse and Cape Fear River basins with in situ instruments at remote field locations, and works with other researchers with cutting edge technologies to monitor storm events and global change effects on local water quality.
  • This position will oversee the operation, maintenance and repair of lab instruments to check and maintain calibration of field instruments that continuously collect water quality data. Lab instruments currently include a Hach Ion Flow-Injection analyzer, an IRMS CNOS system, and associated data and web servers within the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. This position will oversee and work with other lab and field technicians and students to insure data QAQC.
  • The successful candidate will have to work with different researchers and student groups, train graduate and undergraduate students in lab procedures, and maintain safety standards. The position will operate, calibrate, and repair analytical equipment in the lab / field including ion analyzers, mass spectrometers, gas chromatographs, YSI sondes, nitrate analyzers, ADCP surveyors, and associated computer systems and data loggers.
  • The position will maintain the lab and remote data web servers, and provide critical support to field operations. This includes providing off campus support for field teams operating 4-wheel drive trucks, small boats and routine sampling and hydrographic surveying operations. No overnight stays are required, but some time away from campus may be necessary.

Minimum Experience/Education:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in the operation and maintenance/repair of various hydrological field instruments, isotope ratio mass spectrometers and sample preparation devices, flow injection analysis, database maintenance/archiving, and web site maintenance/construction.
  • Knowledge of Windows computers, Excel, MatLab, and experience in database maintenance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including reports and development of standard operating procedures for new equipment and instrumentation are also preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4 year Degree in a science related field and 1 year of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and/or related experience.
  • Prefer degree to be a major in geology, biology, soil science, chemistry, hydrology or other related science fields.
  • Two years experience with analytical instruments; knowledge of Windows computers, Excel, MatLab, and experience in database maintenance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including reports and development of standard operating procedures for new equipment and instrumentation are also preferred.
