Title: Athletic Turf Specialist

General Summary

Assist in management and implementation of practices to improve growing conditions for natural turf on intercollegiate athletic fields to improve playing conditions.

Required Qualifications

1. Three years of work experience in the maintenance of turf grass. Credit for college course work in fields directly related to turf management (such as in the management, maintenance, and operation of recreational areas, facilities, or equipment; diseases and insects; landscape construction; community recreation; plant science; soils; landscape design and management; and safety and first aid) may be substituted for up to two years of work experience on the basis of one semester hour of credit being equal to 0.5 months of experience.

2. Certification by the Illinois Department of Agriculture as a Public Pesticide Operator, specifically Commercial/Not-for-Hire Pesticide Applicator (general standards and turf), as required by the Illinois Pesticide Act.


3. Valid State of Illinois driver’s license.

4. A final candidate must complete a post-offer pre-employment physical exam. Employment is contingent on the successful result of the pre-employment physical.

Work Hours

8:00am-4:30pm Monday-Friday, hours may vary depending on season and workload.

Functional Expectations

Position requires good manual dexterity; mowing involves considerable walking; shoveling snow and mulch requires ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds unassisted and carry for up to 10 feet. Must be able to stand or walk continuously for up to three hours at a time. Ability to crouch, kneel, and bend.
