Lecturer - Art Practice
The Department of Art Practice at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of part-time lecturers to teach studio courses including, but not limited to ceramics, drawing, graphic novels, photography, painting, sculpture, video, foundations of visual thinking, new media, and seminars in contemporary global art. Some of these courses are offered in summer sessions only.
Please indicate your availability and preference for Summer 2020, Fall 2020, or Spring 2021. All courses are listed in the campus general catalog at http://guide.berkeley.edu/courses/art/
Applicants can apply to more than one discipline. Please stipulate at the top of your letter which discipline(s) you are applying for. The number of available positions will vary, depending on the needs of the Department. Positions may vary from 17% to 100%. Duties include teaching a studio and/or lecture course (or courses), advising students, and holding regular office hours. A Lecturer helps students build conceptual and critical foundations, and practical studio skills that focus on materials, methods, form, content, history, and process. Summer Sessions courses meet for a total of 16 hours per week (usually 4 hours x 4 days a week) for 6 weeks. Academic Year courses meet for 6 hours of lecture per week (3 hours x 2 days a week).
Basic Qualifications (by the time of application): Candidates must hold an advanced degree or be enrolled in an advanced degree program.
Additional Qualifications (by start date): Advanced degree by start date
Preferred Qualifications: MFA or equivalent international degree. Outstanding oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and teaching experience
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Approximate starting salary of $6,202 (part-time 11% position for Summer Session). Approximate starting salary of $56,381 annually for the academic year. Some credit may be given to prior college-level teaching experience.
UC Lecturers are academic appointees in an organized bargaining unit and are exclusively represented by American Federation of Teachers - Unit 18.
Appointments for summer are usually reviewed in March, appointments for Fall are usually reviewed in April, and appointments for Spring are usually reviewed in October.
