Departmental Overview

The Engineering Biology Research Consortium (EBRC) and UC Berkeley are seeking a Research Associate interested in moving this important scientific field forward in a responsible and coordinated manner. EBRC is a non-profit, public-private partnership dedicated to bringing together an inclusive community committed to advancing engineering biology to address national and global needs. We showcase cutting-edge research in engineering biology, identify pressing challenges and opportunities in research and application, and articulate compelling research roadmaps and programs to address these challenges and opportunities.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and collaborative Research Associate to be part of our team. The EBRC works on a wide variety of technical and policy focussed products pertaining to engineering biology. As a member of the team your primary duties would include engaging with stakeholders ranging from world renowned academics, industry and government scientists and leaders, and graduate students and postdocs to collect, synthesize, and present information associated with engineering biology. You would also conduct internet and literature research and contribute to ad hoc activities such as (virtual) meetings and workshops. Past EBRC efforts have included security workshops, technical research roadmaps, and international policy conferences.


Responsibilities
  • Using subject matter knowledge, collects and prepares information for use in discussions, meetings of internal and external constituents.
  • Gathers and assembles analytical and factual data on assigned problems and issues to prepare reports and/or analyses summarizing information on the assigned issues and commenting on other significance for internal or external constituents.
  • Determines and locates sources for the collection of information and data.
  • Researches and analyzes processes and procedures, summarizes findings, policies and organizational structures in order to develop and/or implement changes and to provide consultative services to leadership, partners and external stakeholders.
  • Prepares, edits and modifies documents including research reports, manuscripts, presentations and proposals.
  • On a project basis, performs analytical studies on a variety of policies, research initiatives, programs and issues. Helps prepare directives, technical guidance, and other guidelines/instructions for issuance to stakeholders. Prepares preliminary analyses of procedures, and other subjects to contribute to organizational programs, research proposals, and other documentation.
  • Helping with meeting logistics, set up, communications, etc.
  • Foster positive relationships with colleagues, members, funders, policymakers and other stakeholders creating an environment of innovation, collaboration, and progress for EBRC. Participates in program and project planning and development.
  • Helps develop proposals to guide and support a broader strategic direction for the EBRC.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in bioengineering, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, other area associated with the field and/or equivalent experience/training, OR Bachelor's degree in business, economics, public policy, political science, communications, or other relevant liberal arts area plus coursework in the natural sciences and/or engineering and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills and critical thinking.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and influence, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated experience with small to mid-level project management skills.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to manage time effectively and multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Ability to effectively communicate quantitative and qualitative findings to non-academic audiences.
