Biosphere 2 at the University of Arizona is in search of a Researcher/Scientist III. This position advances the mission of the Biosphere 2 Landscape Evolution Observatory (LEO) research system to improve scientific understanding of landscape evolution as an ecosystem process. The duty post for this position is Biosphere 2, Oracle, Arizona. To that end, the LEO project coordinator/research scientist both engages directly with the science (conducting research in the LEO system) and provides leadership to coordinate the collaborative interdisciplinary scientific activities that lead to that advancement. In particular, this position will help lead the LEO scientific program to the next stage, to put “Life on LEO” by developing protocols and implementing approaches to bring vegetation communities to the LEO hillslopes, in accord with an experiment and strategic plan developed through a community process which will be coordinated in part by this position. This position requires advanced scientific knowledge and expertise in the field of ecology, appreciation of and engagement with the related scientific disciplines needed to understand landscape evolution, and demonstrated leadership to drive the field forward. Biosphere 2 is one of the world's most unique facilities dedicated to the research and understanding of global scientific issues. The Biosphere 2 facility serves as a laboratory for controlled scientific studies, an arena for scientific discovery and discussion, and a far-reaching provider of public education. - Coordinates efforts to cultivate and advance scientific community engagement with LEO science, by promoting collaboration within the fields of biology (from evolutionary ecology to plant and microbial biology to ecosystem science), and with related disciplines of hydrology, geomorphology, geochemistry, remote sensing, and data integration.
- Leading, co-leading, or coordination, as appropriate, of proposal-writing efforts to governmental agencies and private foundations for advancing LEO science and for sustaining a long-term research plan for LEO. These efforts will be critical for developing the next “Life on LEO” science phase to investigate the role of plant and microbial processes in landscape evolution, and for deriving new approaches to answer novel scientific questions in the field of ecology in relation to landscape evolution.
- Leads, coordinates, and assists, as appropriate, scientific planning and implementation activities on the LEO hillslopes, working closely with the LEO director of Science, with scientific collaborators, and with Biosphere 2 research staff, postdocs, and students.
- Identifies, prioritizes and manages research and data product development, and delivery to the scientific community.
- Implements grant-funded projects, according to the management plan of the particular proposals funded. Co-leads (with the LEO director of science) the writing of strategic planning documents and reports.
- Authors several peer-reviewed scientific articles, posters and professional presentations per year.
- Additional duties may be assigned.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required. Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is typically required.
- Doctoral Degree in Biological field and strong grant writing skills.
- Must be able to work a flexible weekly schedule including working a combination of day, evening and overnight shifts on a regular basis as required.
- May require work on holiday and weekends as needed by the facility.
