Overview

The Princeton Neuroscience Institute has a Senior Research Specialist position available for the Circuits of coGnitive Systems collaboration (braincogs.org). This project seeks to understand how multiple brain regions work together to carry out cognitive processing using mice as a model system for mammalian brain function. Our project, funded by the NIH BRAIN initiative, is a collaboration between the research groups of Carlos Brody, Mark Goldman (UC Davis), Jonathan Pillow, Sebastian Seung, David Tank, Sam Wang, and Ilana Witten.

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide technical support for the custom optical and behavioral instrumentation used within the multiple laboratories in our project. These systems will be used for large scale optical recording and optogenetic perturbation studies on the mechanisms of working memory and decision-making. After proper training, the successful candidate will also be expected to assist other researchers with the usage of several commercial instruments (confocal microscope, light sheet microscopes, slide scanner).

Work will be performed in conjunction with the recently established Bezos Center for Neural Circuit Dynamics. The successful candidate will work with Bezos Center management and faculty to develop and support the imaging tools and peripheral instrumentation.

This is initially a one-year position with the possibility of renewal, based on satisfactory funding and performance. A commitment of at least two years is preferred.

A bachelor's degree in a science or engineering field is required. A master's or PhD degree is preferred.



Responsibilities

The specific duties include the implementation, and maintenance of:

Custom two-photon, and three-photon, microscopes for cellular resolution calcium imaging of neural populationsVirtual reality systems for rodents. Custom Wide field fluorescence microscopes for macroscopic imaging of neural dynamics across brain regions.State of the art systems for combined imaging and optogenetic perturbation at cellular resolution.

Other duties will require to:

Perform recurrent quality control checks on all microscopes. Keep accurate, legible records to monitor instrument performance. In concert with the Imaging Director, complete scheduled and unscheduled system maintenance as needed.Perform routine laboratory duties including ordering of lab supplies, general lab upkeep, routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.

Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in a science or engineering field is required. A master's or PhD degree is preferred.

Previous experience in optics and/or imaging is required.

Experience in optical design, mechanical design, instrumentation, and electronics are a plus.
