Job Description

The Research Specialist A will be focused on our project to develop a nanomedicine-based treatment for the acute lung disease ARDS, which afflicts 190,000 US patients/year, has a 40% mortality rate, and no approved drugs. We started this project purely in academia, won the award for top new technology from ATS (the main lung research society), and now the project is being funded and conducted in conjunction with a pharmaceutical company to further the development of this treatment. Thus, the project provides a good opportunity to work on developing a new therapy, with experience both in academia and with the pharmaceutical company with which we are collaborating.

The Research Specialist A will perform a broad range of experiments in nanomedicine, pharmacology, and mouse work. The methods will include: producing and characterizing drug-loaded nanoparticles; pharmacological biodistribution experiments (injecting mice with drugs and harvesting organs to determine drug distribution); and the most frequent technique for the Research Specialist A will be injecting our nanomedicines into mouse models of ARDS, such as intra-tracheal LPS followed, by organ harvest within 72 hours to determine ARDS phenotypes and drug side effects.

The Principal Investigator designs the experiments, but the applicant will be expected to troubleshoot these procedures as needed. The applicant will also keep accurate notebooks, perform data analysis, and assist in publication preparation. Additional duties will include assisting in experimental design, and participating in general laboratory activities such as lab meetings, ordering, and maintenance.
