Job Description Summary
The Gene Therapy Program (GTP) is entering a new era of unprecedented opportunity with the great potential to reshape the face of medicine as we know it. Our discoveries have set the stage for successful treatments and possibly even cures for devastating genetic diseases.

The laboratory of Dr. Jim Wilson, at GTP of the University of Pennsylvania, has been a leader in the development of innovative vector technology for close to three decades. We have emerged as the “go-to” organization for public and private partners, who want to participate in the gene therapy space. Currently, we are positioned to lead another round of vector innovation and establish pre-clinical and clinical proof-of-concept in therapeutic applications of in-vivo genome editing.

Continuation of all GTP positions is contingent upon funding.

Job Description

Due to continued growth of our program, we are searching for a new Director, Lab Operations for our new satellite location which will include the day-to-day management of technical operations for GLP/ laboratories and supporting operations in animal vivariums.

As the Director, Lab Operations you will lead your team to ensure lab operations between our main facility and new satellite location are seamless. You will collaborate with the Senior Director to develop and update standard operating procedures, maintaining high quality standards around facilities & equipment maintenance and lab inventory storage & distribution that meet GLP standards. You will train and develop your team to deliver superior service to all GTP leadership and employees and adhere to all safety protocols while doing so. You will manage all laboratory equipment, including validation, calibration (IQ/OQ), and preventative maintenance and maintain equipment logs for the new satellite location. You will collaborate with GTP Leadership to evaluate space planning to improve operational efficiency.

As a top candidate, you will have a broad and current understanding of the technical and equipment needs for GLP laboratories and be able to ensure that the use and operation of its scientific equipment remain accessible and in full operation.


  • A Bachelor's Degree and 7+ years of experience working in a research laboratory.
  • Must have the ability to troubleshoot laboratory equipment.
  • GLP/GMP experience strongly preferred.
  • Must thrive in a team environment, have excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to deal with multiple constituencies (faculty, technicians, vendors, University departments, etc), ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment, and proficiency with standard methods of data analyses.
