Job Details

The Communications Specialist supports Rowan College of South Jersey’s mission statement and strategic objectives and is accountable and responsible to assist the Director in planning, developing, and implementing marketing and communication activities, including website and digital content building and maintaining effective relations with the media, the college family and the community; and producing official college publications. The position is based on the Cumberland campus, but reports to the Director on the Gloucester campus. The majority of work will be for the Cumberland campus, but projects representative of both campuses may be assigned.

Duties:

  1. Leads communications for the Cumberland campus with support and oversight from the Director.
  2. Maintains consistency and editorial style of all College communications and materials, both print and digital utilizing the communications editorial style-guide.
  3. Writes persuasive copy for the college’s printed and digital marketing materials, including newspaper ads, television, radio, social media and the website. Carries out communications and marketing activities assigned by the Director including research, PowerPoint productions, material distribution and group presentations.
  4. Assists the Director in building and maintaining effective media relations at the local, regional, and national levels as well as directly with the college community. Gathers campus news, writes and digitally distributes news releases and feature stories for RCSJ publications, the website, digital marketing campaigns, and for local, regional, and national media. 
  5. Takes digital photographs, processes, and sends the photos online to the media, the college community. 
  6. Maintains news and advertisement clippings, and distributes them digitally to the college community and other targeted audiences.
  7. Assists the Director in the production of official college publications including the annual report, the catalog, handbooks, brochures and other materials. 
  8. Duties include planning and writing materials on-time and within the college’s budget. 
  9. Proofreads college publications.
  10. Represents the Communications and Marketing Office on campus and in the community, and serves on college committees, as assigned.
  11. Perform other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or a related field required. Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations or related field preferred.
  • Three years of directly applicable experience preferred
  • Strong writing skills, particularly involving news writing and persuasive writing. Ability to write in a clear, concise manner with adherence to journalist standards.
  • Familiarity with digital technology including website content management, e-newsletter production, and social media platforms for communication.
  • Familiarity with publication production.
  • Digital journalistic photography experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule with varied hours to meet department and College needs
  • Possess the ability to work well and communicate effectively with prospective and current students, staff, faculty, administration, and colleagues and community partners
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff and a commitment to a student-centered environment
