About the College/Unit/Department:

The University of Georgia’s Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) is a multidisciplinary research institution located on a 700 acre campus on Skidaway Island. The Institute’s primary goals are to further understanding of marine and environmental sciences, conduct leading edge research on marine and coastal systems, and train tomorrow’s scientists. Our campus is also a host to Georgia Southern University’s Applied Coastal Research Lab, NOAA Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary, The University of Georgia’s Marine Education Center and Aquarium, and The Nature Conservancy.

Skidaway Institute of Oceanography is home to the R/V Savannah. The R/V Savannah is operated by the Institute and is a member of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) fleet.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Finance and Operations and the Director of Facilities, the Housing Coordinator/Skilled Tradesman is a full-time professional staff position. Responsibilities are split between the two areas of expertise. For Housing Coordination, responsibilities include, but are not be limited to, scheduling, cleaning, laundry, key issuance, light maintenance, and oversight of the housing operations. For Skilled Trades, responsibilities include, but are not limited to, general maintenance and interior/exterior painting of the housing units. Integral to the success of this position is the ability to multitask between these two functions. Strong customer service skills and the ability to work independently with little supervision.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Considerable experience in one or more of the applicable trades (i.e.: carpentry, machinist, electrician, plumber); or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

High school diploma or GED and one to three years similar experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to operate in a variety of conditions, climate controlled and outdoor environments.

Ability to work effectively with diverse on-campus population.

Ability to maintain and keep records and to organize data in preparation of records and reports using various computer programs (SchoolDude, Microsoft Office, etc).

Effective planning and organizational skills.

Ability to assess and implement institutional policies and procedures.

Ability to stay flexible, to think “outside the box”, to prioritize tasks at hand and to lead and manage change in a positive and inclusive manner.

Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, methods and equipment of the various trades preferred.

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Availability to work infrequent evenings and weekends.

Stand, stoop, climb, bend, stretch and walk as needed to successfully install, inspect, repair and/or construct.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Oversight of day-to-day operations of the campus housing.

Development, implementation, review, and assessment of policy and procedure directly related to daily responsibilities of campus housing.

Respond to and accommodate housing requests received via phone, email, and in-person.

Scheduling of housing units through Office365 software; maintain master schedule of housing occupancy.

Cleaning of vacated units and placing fresh linens in unit to ensure maximum availability of units.

Laundry (wash, dry, fold, and store) all linens related to housing turn-over.

Maintain housing unit keys, issuing to occupants and checking keys back in after occupant departs.

Plan furniture and linen replacement cycles and recommend capital improvements or major repairs.

Light maintenance and repairs as needed.

Repairs and maintains building interiors and exteriors, as assigned by the Director of Facilities.

Maintains and repairs fluid pumping systems.

Assist in the troubleshooting, testing and repair of laboratory equipment and safety systems.

Tests, locates and repairs problems in electrical circuits and equipment.

Performs related construction tasks.

Paints interiors and exteriors of buildings

Performs general grounds keeping duties, as needed

Share on-call responsibilities with existing Facilities staff
