Requirements

Plumber, Operations & Maintenance - Facilities Management

The Plumber performs building trades work in maintaining plumbing and heating, and hot water systems, as well as installs new plumbing and heating fixtures and related components as part of the services provided by the Facilities Management area to maintain University buildings. S/he provides a direct service to the department to ensure a comfortable, safe and clean environment in which the University community can live, learn, and work. Reporting directly to the Mechanical Shop Supervisor along with other plumbers, HVAC mechanics and trades helpers, the plumber has additional duties that include but are not limited to:
  • Performs skilled plumbing work to support University operations, responding to work order requests, direct calls from users, and supervisor's directions to repair/replace plumbing fixtures, systems, and related supply and waste/sewer components.
  • Performs heating trades and related work to support University operations, and maintenance and repairs of water, gas, steam, and chill water lines.
  • Provides training and assistance to other workers to improve staff capability, as well as on the job instruction to helpers and other workers as assigned and in the normal course of performing daily work.
  • Demonstrates use of tools and equipment, and assigns appropriate tasks to helpers and others which enable them to develop their skills in the field.
  • Provides information to supervisors regarding the performance and skill development of helpers and others assigned, ensuring that work is performed in accordance with applicable building codes and local government regulations.
  • Notes and reports any inappropriate installations ensuring that serviced equipment is installed, operated and maintained in accordance with all applicable codes and regulations.
  • Uses and disposes of materials in accordance with applicable environmental safety and control regulations, keeping abreast of changes and new developments in applicable codes and regulations.
  • Records actions taken in response to work orders and other requests, entering such information on forms, documents and/or into computerized record system as needed.
  • Fills out, completes and submits such other forms and documents as may be required to assure that such information is properly recorded and submitted.
  • Provides supervisors and department management with advice and suggestions regarding work methods, procedures, parts, tools and related matters for the purpose of improving the effectiveness and cost of service.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of supply/material needs to ensure that adequate inventory is maintained.


Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 4-5 years of related experience in the trade; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Possess a Journeyman card
  • Possess a valid operator's license
  • Requires completion of apprenticeship or equivalent training in the plumbing trade
  • Ability to operate University commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10K+
  • Possess a medical card and/or certificate issued by the Department of Transportation (DOT), which is issued by a licensed “medical examiner,” after completion of a DOT physical examination as defined in GU Vehicle Policy1017 and DOT Regulations 391.11 (4) - Medical Card/Certificate and 390.5 (1) - Commercial Motor Vehicles (10K+) Definitions (http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov)
