Department Description:The Department of Epidemiology is one of the seven departments located in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. The department’s primary focus is the development and application of research methods to understand the patterns and causes of health and disease, and the application of that knowledge to improving the health of populations. We provide strong training in research methods and opportunities for the application of epidemiology to a wide range of health problems through our research. The achievements of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni have enabled us to become one of the leading academic departments of epidemiology in the world. The department has 30 Tenured-Tenure Track / 10 Joint Tenure-Track Faculty, 25 Fixed Term / 2 Joint Fixed Term Faculty, 119 Adjuncts, 18 EHRA Non-Faculty, 18 Postdocs, 40 SHRA (Staff), 16 SHRA Temporary, 14 SHRA Students and 204 Students (150 PhD, 24 MSPH/PhD, 10 MPH, and 20 MSCR. The department was responsible for the administration of grants and contracts in excess of $28 million for the last fiscal year.

Position Description:THIS IS A TIME LIMITED POSITION

The primary purpose of this position is to aid investigators in a large laboratory in using coronaviruses as models to study the genetics of RNA virus transcription, replication, persistence, pathogenesis, genetics, and cross-species transmission. The person(s) to fill these positions will be part of a team whose goal is to identify and develop new strategies to treat and prevent current and future emerging coronavirus infections.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:This position requires unsupervised organizational and experimental skills
Preferred Qualifications:• Expertise in using mouse models highly preferred
• Mouse colony maintenance, including breeding and general husbandry
• Experience with culturing and maintaining eukaryotic tissue culture cells is highly preferred
• Excellent molecular biology skills (i.e. experience with E.coli culture and DNA extraction, restriction digestions, PCR, DNA fragment purification, ligations, and eukaryotic cell transfections, DNA and RNA quantitation, RNA extractions) and experience performing sequence alignment are preferred.
• Expertise in protein purification techniques
• BSL3 experience is a plus but not required
Ability to work with potentially infectious viruses in confined space
