Department Description:The University of North Carolina Adams School of Dentistry Office of Innovation and Discovery is dedicated to conducting high- quality multi-disciplinary basic, clinical and population-based research to explore the epidemiology diagnosis, pathogenesis and treatment of oral conditions which are deleterious to overall systemic health. The principal research goal is to create new knowledge to ultimately improve the overall health and quality of life for the population, The General and Oral Health Center (GOHC) is the clinical arm of the Office of Innovation and Discovery and as such is a dedicated dental research clinic. The GOHC which is affiliated with UNC TraCs executes and assists with the execution of a wide variety of different kinds of clinical research studies including FDA. Many of our studies are working with patients with Periodontal disease but range from specialty care (SARS-COV-2), medically compromised and high-risk as well as healthy.

Position Description:Coordinate multiple complex research projects, which may include targeted patient recruitment, screening, enrollment, and consenting. Develop and monitor appointment schedules for projects. Uphold execution of study protocol such as safe clinical practice, human ethics research, HIPAA regulations and achieving targeted patient throughput.
Organize and execute multiple clinical research projects, which may include targeted patients performing the following: oral periodontal examinations, oral hygiene instruction, radiography, intra-oral photography, surgical assistance and hygiene services (e.g. scaling and root planing).
Maintain patient and project records. Coordinate treatment and care for GOHC referral patients.
Gather, edit, analyze, and report patient data.
Plan sample collections for research projects which will include collection of biological samples such as plaque, gingival crevicular fluids, saliva, cheek and nasal swabs, and phlebotomy. Develop protocols, Institutional Review Board applications and research project materials working with Pl, sponsors and other faculty/investigators, staff, and trainees.
Brief Primary Investigator and sponsors on the progress of enrollment and status of research studies. Interact with research sponsors (respond to queries, provide reports and data). Coordinate study activities according to code of Federal Regulations and the University regulations while working to maximize time efficiency.
Organize project implementation assuring that all compliance documentation is current and accurate. Monitor and report adverse events per protocol and operating procedures.
Train others in execution of protocols to assure compliance with Federal and University regulations.
Licensed to practice as a Dental Hygienist in the State of North Carolina.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:Knowledge and appreciation for dental clinical research. Experience working in teams. In-depth clinical dental hygiene knowledge, including working with healthy and diseased patients.
Preferred Qualifications:BSDH or MSDH or equivalent education and training. Completion of a research specific educational curriculum or program or equivalent experience. 2-5 years full-time clinical experience preferred.
