Basic Function:The Senior Employee Relations Specialist will manage active grievances, provide performance management services, which include, managerial support, advising, counseling, conflict resolution, and providing problem solving guidance to faculty and staff who are in need of employee relations assistance or resources. Provide excellent customer service to the college community and ensure that services and programs are consistent with the mission and values of HR and the institution.
Duties and Responsibilities:This position is responsible for providing consultative services to all levels of management regarding Employee Relations matters in accordance to relevant DHRM, VCCS, and NOVA policies; administering the performance management and grievance processes; providing training, development and communication support. The position will report to the Employee Relations Manager.
Minimum Qualifications:A bachelor’s degree in human resources, psychology or a related field or a combination of related experience, education, and/or training. Employee relations or conflict resolution experience. Strong, professional communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:Master’s degree in Human Resources, or other closely related field. Previous work experience in higher education and/or the public sector is preferred. Demonstrated successful experience resolving conflict amongst staff and managers. Demonstrated ability to make sound, professional decisions consistent with policies and procedures in an environment with a formalized discipline/grievance process. Experience working in the Commonwealth of Virginia and adhering to DHRM policies and procedures.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Broad working knowledge of the processes and functions of human resources, with an emphasis on employee relations; good project management skills; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and gain the confidence of employees at all levels. Demonstrated knowledge of positive customer service. Ability to deal comfortably and easily with people of different levels of education and experience. Must have ability to articulate and implement policies and procedures in a consistent and fair manner. Must possess exceptional organizational, interpersonal and communication skills; proficiency in the use of office technologies, such as Microsoft Office suite of products; must be detail-oriented, flexible and able to prioritize multiple projects. Confidence in public speaking, as well as ability to relay unfavorable news to employees, particularly executing termination notices. High level of emotional intelligence.
