Server Systems Administrator

Appointment: Regular, full-time position

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Server Systems Manager, the Systems Administrator (Windows) serves as a key team member in the systems group in Network, Systems, and Enterprise Systems (NSET) group of Technology Services. This role is directly responsible for administering campus-wide Windows server systems in a team environment. The Systems Administrator works closely with campus colleagues maintaining the university's administrative and academic server resources and planning for growth and new services consistent with Puget Sound's mission and strategic objectives. Particular emphasis will be placed on systems integration in a technologically diverse environment, encompassing a variety of Microsoft systems and vendor solutions. In addition, this position will have an important role in coordination/management of projects and operations in the group. This position offers a flexible work schedule to be worked out with the position supervisor.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the primary systems administrator for Windows servers and services.
    o Monitor system performance and utilization
    o Install, configure, and document new servers and applications
    o Identify, troubleshoot, and fix server and application issues
    o Maintain and audit user accounts
    o Maintain servers and system security according to campus standards
    o Track vulnerabilities and apply appropriate patches and upgrades
    o Generate statistics for operational review and planning
  • Respond rapidly to system maintenance needs, including on weekends and evenings.
  • Work with the Systems Team on security and audit processes for all systems.
  • Respond to user email messages, phone calls and Service Desk inquiries in a professional manner and in a timely fashion.
  • Develop new procedures and learn new technologies with little oversight.
  • Oversees the Active Directory domain, Microsoft Exchange, and Microsoft SQL server systems.
  • Conduct application testing after server maintenance.
  • Shut down and restart application and server processes before and after maintenance windows.
  • Participate as a resource for Technology Services.
  • Other duties as needed.

    Qualifications:
  • At least two years of production system administration with experience deploying and managing software and systems in both physical and virtualized environment, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience are required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Windows server administration in a production environment.
  • Experience administering and maintaining Microsoft Exchange, Active Directory, and Microsoft SQL server.
  • Deploying and managing software and systems in physical and virtualized environments.
  • Installation of server hardware and operating system software.
  • Administrative script development and maintenance (Windows batch, PowerShell, etc.).
  • Ability to work outside of normal hours including weekends.
  • Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community.

    Highly desired:
  • Performance monitoring and tuning experience.
  • Linux server administration in a production environment (Red Hat Enterprise Linux and CentOS is preferred).
  • Web services experience.
    Understanding of protocol technologies such as LDAP, SSL, and Active Directory.
  • Identity management understanding, including federated identity solutions (Okta, SAML).

    Desired:
  • Programming experience using modern language (PHP, Java, C#, etc.).
  • PeopleSoft server or environment experience.
  • Database systems experience (Oracle, MySQL).
  • VMWare vSphere experience.
  • Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community
