Job Description Summary:
Provides academic and career advising, evaluates academic records, and provides other academic support services to traditional undergraduates/advisors/staff. The incumbent will thus work as part of the advising team to provide general and major-specific academic advisement as well as career counseling on topics of career readiness, resume development, job search skills, etc. Furthermore, the academic and career advisor will provides academic support and workshops to students, including training support for the Director of Academic and Career Advising and the Associate Dean of Academic Support and Retention Services.

Academic Advising Responsibilities
Provides academic advising in general education, elective courses, and major requirements leading to timely graduation to traditional undergraduate students. Serves as expert and primary contact to staff and faculty advisors who are unclear about academic policies or requirements or the interpretation of the academic degree evaluation (CAPP). Assists students on walk-in basis with questions about academic policies and requirements, registration, graduation, and commcement. Assists Associate Dean in advisor and student peer training ahead of Summer Opportunity for Advising & Registration (SOAR).
Career Counseling Responsibilities
Works collaboratively with all colleges (CAS, CBPM, and LFCE) and campuses (Main and ROC) to provides career counseling in career readiness topics, resume development, and job search skills. Serves as an expert on the 8 NACE core competencies, soft skills necessary for the workforce, and technology platforms offered to students at La Verne. Provides group counseling to help students make informed career decisions through various topics in career readiness, job search skills, and resume development.
Retention and Programming Responsibilities
Facilitates workshops and seminars with all colleges (CAS, CBPM, and LFCE) and campuses (Main and ROC) for all students to enrich and facilitate students’ advising, registration, and curricular experiences for purposes of retaining through continues registration through graduation. Works with University Advancement and Alumni Relations to facilitate alumni-student mentorship. Assists the department in developing, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating specialized career advising programs, services, and workshops using professional resources and literature. Individual facilitates training workshops for advisors and academic enrichment sessions to traditional undergraduates. Leads presentations and information sessions with other departments who interact with students or are responsible for admission, financial aid, housing, health, or mental health services.
Administrative and Committee Assignments
Serves as Academic Advising Office representative in administrative and faculty committees as assigned by the Dean or Associate Dean. Provides academic services to the Dean and Associate Dean and University Registrar on matters relating to academic appeals or disputes.
Reporting and Data Extraction
Extracts data and other reports from Banner and Cognos to provide statistical and narrative reports for the Associate Dean or Dean on advising and retention efforts and outcomes. Provides said reports to the division and other campus stakeholders as needed to inform academic, curricular, enrollment, and retention initiatives and interventions.
Other Duties as assigned by the Director of Advising and/or Associate Dean
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution
- 2 years of academic advising experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
- 2 years of experience working with college students or young adults in an academic or career service counseling capacity preferred.
- Computer skills
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
- Interpersonal skills
- Strong Written and Verbal skills
- Banner Information system and Cognos experience
- Master’s degree in Behavioral Sciences, Counseling, Business, Education, or Liberal Arts, etc.
