Scope of Job:
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body as Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy beginning in the 2020-2021 academic year. Over 91% of the students enrolled at UTRGV identify as Hispanic, making UTRGV one of the top 3 universities with the highest percentage of Hispanic students.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is accepting applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position, with a research focus in the areas of Gravitational-Wave Astronomy, Radio-Astronomy and Astrophysics, to begin in Fall 2021. The department has strong research groups in this area, with several members of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration working in the areas of continuous wave and supernova data analysis, lasers, optics R&D, detector characterization and noise modeling, and electromagnetic follow-up. Additionally, Radio-astronomy research focuses on transient phenomena and their detection in the low radio-frequency range. This research is conducted at several state-of-the-art laboratories at UTRGV, as well as through collaborative work with the two LIGO national laboratories in Washington State and Louisiana, the nationwide Low Frequency All Sky Monitor (LoFASM) network and a dedicated gravitational waves optical follow-up facility in the Southern Hemisphere. The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) is available for computationally intensive tasks. The successful candidate should complement these research areas, but outstanding candidates in closely related fields will also be considered. A new PhD in Physics has been recently approved by the University of Texas system and is expected to receive state approval soon.

Responsibilities of the position include delivering instruction in physics at the undergraduate, Masters, and Ph.D. level; conducting research, including attracting extramural funding; and participating in service activities within the department, university, and community.

Working at The University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
