Position Summary:

The UC Irvine Student Health Center is a comprehensive outpatient clinic staffed with licensed primary care physicians, psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers, dentists, physician assistants, registered nurse practitioners, and registered nurses. Medical specialists from various disciplines including dermatology, orthopedics/sports medicine, gynecology, internal medicine, and ENT provide on-site consultation on a regular basis. Student Health also offers basic radiology and clinical laboratory services, insurance consultation, and an on-site pharmacy, making SHC a comprehensive and convenient clinic dedicated to serving students.

Under the Supervision of the Clinical Laboratory Manager, the Clinical Lab Scientist independently performs clinical laboratory procedures accurately and precisely for use in immediate medical diagnosis by Student Health Center staff physicians. Assumes responsibilities and is accountable for direct and indirect patient care in all clinical laboratory functions, such as inventory management, cost management, quality control and quality assurance, customer service, etc.

Demonstrated highly proficient with venipuncture and micro-collection techniques.

Graduation from college with a major in an appropriate scientific field.

Must possess current State of California Clinical Lab Science Licensure as a generalist.

Knowledge of current clinical laboratory regulatory procedures and ability to implement these procedures effectively. Skills to effectively communicate important medical information to the appropriate personnel. Skills to maintain and supervise the proficiency training program. Skills to evaluate statistical documentation relative to laboratory procedures and equipment. Skills to monitor laboratory cost effectiveness. Knowledge of current medical laboratory practices and procedures. Skills to handle minor troubleshooting of equipment used in the laboratory. Knowledge and experience in Basic clinical microbiology testing. Knowledge of all the OSHA and State laws and regulations on lab safety. Knowledge of all State and CLIA 88 laws and regulations, and maintain high level of quality assurance work. Knowledge and experience in clinic chemistry and automation procedures. Must be proficient as Microsoft Excel and Word. Typing ability and computer knowledge for data entry into LIS. Ability to work independently.

Preferred:

Two or more years of CLS experience.

Special Conditions Required:

Although this position's schedule is 60%, Mon - Fri and during traditional work hours, weekends or non-traditional work hours may be required for special projects or busy times of the year, or when strict deadlines must be met. In the case of extended hours, this position may be required to work those hours. Employment in this position is contingent upon successful completion of a Department of Justice (DOJ) Live Scan background check, verification and continued monitoring of licensure as it applies to the position, and successful completion of our background review or credentialing process, as appropriate to the position. The employee must comply with OSHA, CA/OSHA, and CDC recommendations and requirements regarding vaccination and testing of healthcare employees. This includes, but may not be limited to; current hepatitis B immunizations, annual flu vaccinations, and annual tuberculosis screening. At the discretion of Student Health Center, the employee may be offered an option to sign a declination acknowledgement in lieu of receiving an annual flu vaccination. Per the UC Ethics Briefing, the employee is responsible for reporting any and all potential conflicts of interest to their supervisor in a timely manner.
