Job Description

The College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) at Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-SA) invites applications for a half-time Career Success Advisor appointment beginning in Spring 2021. A regional comprehensive university, A&M-SA has approximately 6,700 students enrolled in over 50 undergraduate programs and 13 graduate programs. Transition University for Career Advancement and Successful Adulthood (TU CASA) provides a post-secondary education program for students with intellectual disabilities. TU CASA aims to provide the following: (a) a fully inclusive with access to typical and specialized post-secondary services and support systems; (b) utilizes a person-centered approach in providing individualized post-secondary experience; (c) offers post-secondary education credentials for addressing academic, vocational, and independent living domains: (d) is responsive to cultural and sociology-economic factors in the community; (e) is comprehensively evaluated; and (f) has a prospect for replication in the region and across the state.

The Career Success Advisor is responsible for coordinating and monitoring the career-based learning internship opportunities associated with the TU CASA program. The Career Success Advisor is responsible for implementation of career skill development opportunities, observation of internship students, development of workforce/career placements, and serving as the VR liaison, internship internship, and provide post-completion workforce monitory and coordinating with the Community Partnership Projects. They will work with the PI and Co-PIs to support career related data collection efforts and work in conjunction with the existing career and professional services provided by the Mays Center and ensure these services meet the individual needs of the TU CASA students. This is a grant funded position that is based on the continuation of the grant (for up to 5 years)

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of related experience; Knowledge and understanding of Career skill development, organization, opportunities, goals and objectives, and policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge and experience in career skill development, including coordinating and monitoring career-based learning experiences.
  • Experience planning, coordinating and organizing complex, multi-activity projects related to career skill development.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Ability to develop cooperative relationships among faculty, staff, administration, University leadership and workforce/career community partners.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) reading, writing and speaking skills.
  • Experience working with first generation college students from cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Possess proven track record of excellence in career skills development.
  • Experience working with diverse families.
  • Experience in the field of special education with a focus on intellectual disabilities, transition, and/or disability support and/or career services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and monitors the career-based learning and internship opportunities associated with the TU CASA program.
  • Responsible for implementation of career skill development opportunities, observation of internship students, development of workforce/career placement, VR liaison, internship instructor, and post-completion workforce monitoring and coordinating with the Community Partnership Projects.
  • Works with PI, Co-PIs,and Program Director to support career related data collection efforts.
  • Works in conjunction with the existing career and professional services provided by the Mays Center to ensure these services meet the individual needs of the TU CASA students.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Strong self-discipline and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students and community partners.
  • Ability to interact with students and families with diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to develop capacity in instructors and staff to work successfully with students of varied experience and backgrounds.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, community groups, educators, parents, civic associations and the general public as necessitated by the work.
  • Knowledge of the design and development of career-based learning and internship/practicum to support TU CASA activities.
  • Skill in utilizing computer software.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain required reports and records.
  • Develop visual aids and other instructional materials to meet specific training need.

This is a grant funded (time limited) position. This will be part-time position for the first year, 9 month, 50% effort, $15,750.
