Director of Spec Programs/Assoc Dir of Admissions Description/Job Summary

The Director of Special Programs/Associate Director Admissions is responsible to the Office of the President for providing leadership and direction in the planning, development, implementation, evaluation and ongoing improvement of special programs such as (but not limited to) the Mayor's Scholars, International Students, Veterans, Near Completers, Promise Academy, and Articulation and Retention, including partnerships, activities and events on campus and within the larger community. The individual is responsible for data collection, reporting and assessment working in collaboration with the Director of Institutional Research. The individual should bring a sense about collegiality and shared governance in a higher education setting and demonstrate creativity and innovation.

Responsibilities/Duties

Essential Functions:

  1. Provide vision, leadership and management of Special Programs including:
  2. Program design and implementation that is student-centered and reflects best practices for student support, retention and completion.
  3. Use data to drive program design and program implementation, to assess progress and make improvements.
  4. Create high standards for program implementation through effective work, planning, and project management.
  5. Lead regular internal cross-functional workgroup meetings.
  6. Communicate and advance program goals, and outcomes to the President, Board of Trustees, and other stakeholders effectively in oral and written presentations and reports by:
  7. Advocating for Programs throughout the College and collaborating with Cabinet and their staffs for the resources, data and processes required for high-standard implementation.
  8. Participating in professional, community and civic activities and organizations that enhance the image and mission of the College and promote Program performance and goals.
  9. Serving as the internal/external voice, representative and leadership for Special Programs.
  10. Oversee Program staffs and collaborate with faculty and student support areas to provide services and strategic opportunities for student success.
  11. Collaborate to develop and implement a model for an institutional enrollment management plan.
  12. Utilize technology and data to strengthen the operations, effectiveness and efficiencies of Programs.
  13. Seek external funding sources and grants for Program support and student scholarships.
  14. Provide strategies to work with marketing team to promote institutional identity for Programs.
  15. Perform related duties as assigned.


Knowledge and Abilities:

  1. Ability to operate at an executive level, with the capacity to communicate and execute vision, strategy, program and organizational design, operational and technology management, data analytics and team management.
  2. Understanding of the community college student special population.
  3. Ability to collaborate and drive results effectively in a community college setting.
  4. Monitor budgets and external funding sources.
  5. Understanding of current national best practices in Special Programs and community college student support and retention.
  6. Experience with enrollment processes (including admissions, advising, registration and financial aid).
  7. Computer proficient in a PC environment, skilled in the use of Microsoft Office Suite products, databases, and enterprise systems (ie. Banner, PeopleSoft, Jenzar, .
  8. Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills for a team oriented and collaborative organizational culture.
  9. Ability to supervise, motivate staff and encourage productivity and change in a diverse environment
  10. Demonstrate ability to create and realign policies, procedures and practices.
  11. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Required Qualifications
  1. Master's degree required from an accredited college or university, doctorate preferred.
  2. Experience in program design, implementation and evaluation utilizing data analytics and national best practices.
  3. Skill in the principles and practices of supervision, management, work planning and project management.
  4. Demonstrated comfort and ability to establish partnerships and work with external publics.
  5. Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  6. Possess evidence of membership in and appreciation for student-centered professional organizations.
  7. Minimum of 7 years leadership and supervisory
