General Description

College of the Sequoias Community College District is seeking an equity-minded candidate to fill a full-time, tenure-track position in the Sociology Department beginning August 2021. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching sociology courses such as Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, Sociology of Gender, Marriage and Family Life, and Sociology of Deviance. This position will be assigned to the College of Sequoias Tulare campus. If necessary to fill a teaching load, classes may be assigned at the Visalia or Hanford campuses and may also include evening and online teaching assignments. Participation in the governance of the District by way of committee assignments is expected. Other responsibilities include maintenance of a number of office hours, full participation in departmental responsibilities, and the willingness to create and/or participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equity, justice, and appreciation for diversity throughout the college.

The candidate must meet the following criteria.

  • Master’s in sociology OR
  • Bachelor’s in sociology AND Master’s in anthropology, any ethnic studies, social work, or psychology OR
  • The equivalent (requires equivalency see link below). AND
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic social, economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

    In looking at application materials, the Hiring Committee also seeks evidence of the following:

  • Successful experiences teaching sociology with an intersectional (race, class, and gender) approach to students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, experiences, and identities, including underprepared and non-traditional students.
  • Evidence of equity-mindedness in implementing contemporary pedagogical philosophies, methods, and technology in the classroom and in online settings to increase student knowledge and success in sociology.
  • Ability to create a dynamic learning environment that values instructor-student interaction and encourages students to use their sociological imagination.
  • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with faculty, staff, students and community members to enhance student and institutional success.
  • Enthusiasm to develop and expand the Sociology program at the Tulare campus.
  • At least one year of teaching experience at the adult, secondary, and /or post-secondary level.
  • Experience with implementing and assessing student learning outcomes and course and program-level outcomes.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.
