Scope of Job:
Responsible for skilled maintenance of grass, plants, and trees, including determining and applying treatment to unhealthy plants.


Description of Duties:
• To care for grass, plants, and trees and maintain equipment used.

• Mows grass, trims shrubs, sprays plants, water plants, transplants a large variety of plants and trees, works in the greenhouse, and maintains grounds.

• Operates and prepares grounds care equipment.

• Operates and makes minor repairs on variety of equipment, and provides technical assistance within area of responsibility.

• Performs other duties as assigned.


Supervision Received:
General direction from the assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
None.

Required Education:
Completion of the 6th grade. Ability to read and write English well enough to comprehend Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) on chemicals, and other containers, and to understand work orders, complete time cards, and receive oral and written work directions.

Preferred Education:

Licenses/Certifications:
Valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain within six (6) weeks of hiring.

Required Experience:
Six (6) months of experience in the care of plants, trees, and lawns and the knowledge of the operation of grounds equipment.

Equipment:
Skill in the operation and of tractors, cultivators, hedgers, power mowers, trucks and other equipment used in grounds maintenance.


Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Exposure to weather, hazardous mechanical equipment, and agricultural chemicals. Exposure to outside environments, hot, dry, wet, cold; some work in restricted spaces, exposure to dust and dirt, some duties and working conditions may create bodily strain and discomfort.


Other:
Must be physically able to perform duties described above. May occasionally lift heavy objects weighing up to 100 lbs. with or without assistance. Duties involve the lifting, pushing, and moving of heavy objects; digging, stooping, crawling, climbing, reaching, and other manual activities requiring great physical exertion. Danger of hazards and conditions inherent to the trade or assignment. This position will be subject to a pre-employment physical.

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
