Reporting to the Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies in the School of Social Sciences, with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Dean, the lead Researcher is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to secure extramural funding for research, infrastructure, and graduate student training from federal and state government agencies, as well as, corporate and foundation entities. The Researcher performs research, provides university and/or public service, demonstrates professional competency and activity. Specific responsibilities include development of a comprehensive research program strategy for the School; coordination of large projects involving faculty and administrative staff across academic schools and central administrative units, including UCI Applied Innovation and Foundation Relations; identification and promotion of funding opportunities to support research endeavors and graduate training; and direct participation in proposal preparation, submission, and acceptance on behalf of one's self and the School.

With the goal of increasing available funding to support the research and training missions of the School of Social Sciences ,as well as the Researcher directly, the lead researcher will 1) develop high-impact disciplinary and multidisciplinary proposals involving extramural funding, 2) work with the Dean, Associate and Assistant Deans, and Social Sciences faculty and staff members to develop funding strategies, 3) facilitate proposal development at the individual faculty, department, and School levels, 4) research and identify available interdisciplinary science research and educational opportunities not typically pursued by individual faculty endeavors 5) personally apply for grant funding and lead grant activity once funded.

Develop relationships with external funding agencies and facilitate communication between funding agencies and the School's researchers. Foster strategic connections with key individuals at funding agencies such as Program Officers/Managers/Directors and staff.

Stimulate and facilitate interdisciplinary interactions between departments, Schools, research centers, and the Office of Applied Innovation. Identify and promote interactions with outside entities, such as companies, other universities/colleges, and governmental and non-governmental organizations.

With the goal of increasing proposal submissions, identify, promote, and communicate viable funding opportunities.

Develop information on federal and other funding opportunities in order to advise and assist faculty members/principle investigators in submitting competitive proposals.

Investigate opportunities for support of research and student training from corporations, foundations, and other sponsors in cooperation with the respective Development Office and University Advancement.

Where appropriate, assist with the scientific aspects of proposal submissions. Coordinate with faculty and provide technical grant writing support for proposals. In consultation with School and/or ORA staff, assist with the development of project budgets, budget justifications, and other supporting documentation. Assist with supporting biographical and resource materials.

Draft letters of support, grant and contract acknowledgements, and requests for funding for signature by the Chancellor, Provost, Deans, Departmental Chairs, and other appropriate persons.

To stimulate interdisciplinary and collaborative movements, coordinate and initiate verbal and written communications and participate in meetings, seminars, and conferences/symposiums in order to foster interactions to advance research proposal efforts.

With the goal of increasing the yield in research support awards, develop and implement programs to strengthen proposal development. Activities include on-campus workshops, web-based materials, and other initiatives to guide and assist faculty, research staff and self in developing competitive proposals.
