General Description:

Serve as Life Science Department Laboratory Paraprofessional.  Responsible for maintaining the Biology laboratories and prep rooms.  Schedule, set-up and track laboratory courses, files, events and process associated paperwork.

Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. BS or MS in Biology or related field with one-year minimum laboratory skills experience required.
  2. Organizational and personnel management skills are essential.
  3. Small equipment maintenance skills required.
  4. Demonstrated ability to relate to people of all ages, races, and social-economic backgrounds.
  5. Demonstrated ability to operate office technology, software, & equipment. Establishing yourself as the “go to” person with all equipment and software.
  6. Ability and willingness to upgrade skills including technology or process changes.
  7. Ability to mentor, coach and work with student workers/interns while setting a good example by demonstrating professional workplace behavior and work ethics.
  8. Demonstrated ability to create a warm, welcoming environment to students, parents, faculty/staff and community members especially during busy/chaotic times.
  9. Demonstrated use of tact, judgment and discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  10. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a successful team while accomplishing tasks and assignments without assistance, even while multi-tasking.
  11. Highly motivated and solution oriented with a high degree of integrity, ethics and dedication to the mission of the College.
  12. Demonstrated excellence in both oral and written communication skills.
  13. Requires prolonged sitting or standing, keyboarding and work on computer (hand/eye strain), speaking in English via phone or in person
  14. Strong knowledge of grammar, punctuation and writing techniques with the ability to produce malleable documents.
  15. Available to respond to evening course/lab support when necessary.

Essential Function:

  1. Set up all levels of biology laboratories (supplies, chemical preparation, and field equipment); maintain cleanliness, order, and safe environments in assigned laboratories.
  2. Maintain cleanliness, order, and safe environments in biology preparation rooms.
  3. Maintain an updated laboratory set-up file for each laboratory course/class.
  4. Maintain a calendar of laboratory events appropriate to the advanced ordering of supplies and materials.
  5. Inventory, order and receive materials, supplies, equipment, and process associated paperwork.
  6. Coordinate the off campus laboratory sites (supplies, perishables, assist faculty/adjuncts with set-up) and transfer to various sites.
  7. Supervise, train, and schedule student employees in the Life Science Department.
  8. Maintain chemical, equipment, and material inventories. (SDS files)
  9. Comply with safety regulations and maintain safety records in compliance with College and appropriate safety organizations.
  10. Maintain record of laboratory expenses, prepare Perkins and other budget requests.
  11. Maintain equipment and instruments including microscopes; arrange for equipment repair.
  12. Participate as a member of the Safety Committee.
  13. Coordinate the set-up with new class (equipment / supplies / set-up sheets.)
  14. Collaborate with instructor to coordinate lab tech, equipment, and usage.
  15. Manages budget and researches/recommends vendors and equipment selection based on the instructor and student needs.
  16. Support College partners by aligning course and lab outcomes.
  17. Review department lab schedules to ensure space is available.
  18. Other duties as assigned.
