Open Rank Faculty Position in Environmental Resilience & Equity
The University of Virginia seeks applicants for an Open Rank- tenure/tenure track position in the broad area of “smart cities and landscapes” as part of a cluster hire in environmental resilience being coordinated through the pan-university Environmental Resilience Institute (https://eri.virginia.edu//). Candidates working in this area who are focused on the environmental racism dimensions of cities and landscapes will be given highest priority. This multi-year cluster hire is focused on the development and growth of a group of transdisciplinary scholars working together to tackle persistent socio-environmental problems in Virginia and beyond. It is expected that the successful candidate will hold a joint appointment in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Data Science or the School of Architecture. Rapid environmental change is presenting a wide range of challenges that are not felt uniformly. Marginalized communities have long endured lower standards of environmental quality which has contributed to lower human health outcomes. Not only are these effects persistent, they are also accelerating in regions most impacted by climate change such as coastal cities and agricultural regions. These impacted communities are the least equipped to take advantage of the research frontiers presented by distributed computing and cyber-physical systems. These research areas stand to radically improve the ways in which designers, engineers, and decision makers approach human settlements.
Successful candidates will have interest in design and systems thinking. For candidates with training in Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, topics of interest include, but are not limited to, coastal and environmental resilience design research in combination with data visualization, geographic simulation, or urban sensing addressing issues of social injustice and environmental degradation. For candidates with training in Civil and Environmental Engineering topics of interest include, but are not limited to cyber-physical systems, environmental systems engineering, and resilient infrastructure. For candidates with training in Data Science, interests should include predictive modeling and the ability to teach in the residential and online programs in the School of Data Science.

Applicants must have a PhD by the time of appointment, a record of excellence in research, as appropriate for the candidate's rank, a commitment to teaching excellence, and a commitment to the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Tenured appointments require documented excellence in research and teaching, and an emerging national reputation. Successful applicants are expected to establish an internationally recognized research group. The successful applicant will have a track record of interdisciplinary work.
