The Department of Radiology at the Stanford School of Medicine is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 3 - Lab Manager to join the newly established, interdisciplinary DeSimone Lab in the Clark Building at Stanford. The ideal candidate will start as soon as possible to (i) be part of establishing the lab, (ii) take part in equipment installation and lab layout plans, and (iii) participate in student recruitment and onboarding activities. With appointments spanning the School of Medicine (Radiology), the School of Engineering (Chemical Engineering), and, by courtesy, the Graduate School of Business, Dr. Joseph M. DeSimone is launching programs at Stanford with themes in:

  • Chemical Engineering and Material Science;
  • Translational Medicine; and
  • Entrepreneurship, Digital transformation, and Manufacturing.


Within the Chemical Engineering and Material Science focus area, the DeSimone Lab is pursuing new approaches to additive manufacturing/ 3D printing, including topology optimization in material design and advances to achieve higher resolution printers. Within the Translational Medicine focus area, the DeSimone Lab is pursuing the development of enhanced delivery systems for vaccines; local drug delivery approaches; and digital therapeutic device innovations via additive manufacturing (including orthopedic and implanted devices) to address a wide range of medical conditions, including pediatric conditions such as plagiocephaly and cleft palate. In the Entrepreneurship, Digital transformation, and Manufacturing focus area, efforts will relate to subjects including supply chain disruption; a circular economy; diversity, equity and inclusion; and peer accountability in business execution. The work of the Life Science Research Professional 3 - Lab Manager will be focused primarily in the first two categories (Chemical Engineering & Material Science, and Translational Medicine), with additional exposure and opportunities for growth in the third category. The DeSimone Lab is a dynamic, interdisciplinary workplace that will provide unique access to cutting edge technologies and scientific thought, with the potential for widespread recognition of scientific contributions. The DeSimone Lab values a diversity of identity, thought, background, expertise, perspective, and life experience.

Duties include:
  • Design research approaches for a major portion of research project(s), including background research, experimental design and execution, problem solving, and writing up for publication.
  • Develop new protocols; test and evaluate a variety of approaches.
  • Conduct complex (lab and/or field) experiments, and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes; analyze and interpret research data resulting from original procedures and methods.
  • Assist with new research proposals and applications for funding and grants.
  • Prepare periodic progress reports or written reports on all phases of the research project.
  • Lead or participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.
  • Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the results section. May be a co-author on publications. Present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
  • Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; propose new research directions based on new advances discussed in literature.
  • Oversee supply and equipment budget under minimal supervision of principal investigator or business manager.
  • Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.
  • Formally supervise and train new staff or students as needed, including hiring, performance management, and related duties. Provide instruction on techniques and consultation on project work.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioengineering, or related life science field is preferred. Highly motivated candidates of all levels are encouraged to apply.
  • Hands-on experience in technology development, molecular biology, and chemical analysis.
  • Experience with quantitative data analysis.
  • Curiosity in research and creativity in problem-solving.
  • A great team member with strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to adapt to and effectively manage changes in a fast paced and dynamic environment.
  • A passion for science and sense of urgency to find new medicines to benefit patients.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, how to lead and design in vivo animal experiments, including tail vein injections, immunizations, etc.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
  • Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and four years of relevant work experience; or Master's degree in a related scientific field and two years relevant experience; or PhD in related science field.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.
  • Expert level knowledge and skills in field of science related to research project.
  • General computer skills, experience with databases and scientific applications, and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
  • Developing project management skills.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • May require working in close proximity to blood borne pathogens.
